Replacing p & pp with : in Harvard1

Hi everyone,

I am currently formatting a paper for a journal that uses the harvard 1 style for everything, except they prefer to use colons (with a space each side) for page numbers rather than p. or pp.

I read some other discussions on this forum and tried to adjust the CSL myself but I couldn't find any of the variables they talked about. Could anyone tell me what I need to edit and how?
  • which journal? There are many, many Harvard styles on the repository (many of them not explicitly labeled Harvard), there is a good chance the right style is already there.
  • This one: http://meta.erudit.org/

It's called Meta: Journal des Traducteurs/Meta: Translator's Journal. The stylesheet is in French. I can translate it if need be but the only major difference between that and Harvard1 is the use of a : instead of p/pp. as a separator between the date and page number in a source.
  • If you look at the bibliography requirements that looks completely different from Harvard1 - author last names in small caps, year in parentheses, "et" instead of "&", things like "in" and "et al" in italics etc. etc.

If you really just want to get rid of the p/pp, follow these instructions:
http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step in general and specifically delete this line:
    <label variable="locator" suffix="." form="short" strip-periods="true"/>
  • Hmm. Thanks. I will need to look into that more deeply. I will make that first change and see if I can figure out how to do the rest. Will that tutorial cover everything I need to know?

Once I have made the changes, I will add it to the repository here.
  • I have tried looking at the xml and the guide and can't make head nor tail of it. All I want is to have a : between the author name and the page no in in-text citations, to have the author names in small caps in the bibliography and to italicise "in" references. Despite trawling through all the guides, I am still stuck. Is there a readable tutorial that doesn't assume that you have a degree in xml?
  • There is a visual editor here:
    http://editor.citationstyles.org/visualEditor/
    and a basic tutorial here:
    https://github.com/citation-style-editor/csl-editor/wiki/User-guide-for-the-CSL-EditorDesktop

    beyond that see here:
    https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/wiki/Requesting-Styles
I'm a bit confused why you're so fixated on the Harvard 1 style. I'm pretty sure there are closer matches available. You can use this
    http://editor.citationstyles.org/searchByExample/
    to find them.
  • Thanks. I will have a look at them and see if there is a closer match. you have been a great help. Thanks.
