internet archive

I'm very impressed with all the recent sites that have become zotero-readable. I'm sure I remember some thread to propose other sites but cannot find it now. Therefore, a feature request: it would be great would the Internet Archive be zotero-readable too. I presume this might come with the web-based server?
  • We plan to make IA compatible (and much more) as part of our recently announced alliance with them.
  • I notice that although a book symbol appears for books I locate in the internet archive, the results from the translator are disappointing.

Here's what I get at this link, for instance (results pasted from my library):

    Item Type Book
    URL http://www.archive.org/details/playspleasantan06shawgoog
    Accessed 2009-07-13 13:11:24
    Repository Internet Archive
Title Internet Archive: Free Download: Plays: Pleasant and Unpleasant
    Short Title Internet Archive
    Date Added 2009-07-13 09:11
    Date Modified 2009-07-13 09:11

And here are the results after I had edited them by hand to include the correct title, author, and volume number. I also remove the short title. All of this information was available to me at the top of the page in a table; apparently their metadata that is being picked up by Zotero doesn't match.

    Plays: Pleasant and Unpleasant
    Item Type Book
    Author Bernard Shaw
    URL http://www.archive.org/details/playspleasantan06shawgoog
    Volume 1
    Publisher Brentano's
    Date 1905
    Accessed 2009-07-13 13:11:24
    Repository Internet Archive
    Title Plays: Pleasant and Unpleasant
    Date Added 2009-07-13 09:11
    Date Modified 2009-07-13 09:50

I'm frustrated by this. Does Zotero use only the metadata, or can it also skim a page and parse out information that is organized in a certain way? Internet Archive does have their data presented in what appears to be a systematic and organized fashion on the visible part of the page. Some of it is incorrect--the publication date on the digitized image of the book itself is MCMXII, 1912, and I have seen an incorrect publisher on another book--but that isn't a Zotero issue, except that cautious users need to double check....

Thanks for any info on this issue.
  • I am bumping this as I am having translator issues with Internet Archive.
  • Scratch that, I was trying to import from the display page of the book, I went to the details page for the book and it imported. Sorry.
  • could you specify? E.g. on the page above I now get all information on the page.
  • It was my fault, the translator failed on the full text display of a book. When I went to the information page for the book instead everything worked as it should. I should have checked that before posting, I am sorry.
  • Hi, did the connection with IA break due to interface changes? I get an "An error occurred while saving this item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information" while trying to save an archived website into my library.
  • works for me. URL?
  • In Google Chrome it gives the same error on ALL IA URLs, eg: https://web.archive.org/web/20070209060027/http://pipes.yahoo.com/
  • I just tried it in Firefox, same error.
  • A translator fix is now up (if you're interested, the http:// was hardcoded in the translator, so it failed on https:// connections). Your version of Zotero will automatically update within 24hs, or you can update manually using the "Update Now" button in the "General" tab of the Zotero preferences. If you're using Standalone, restart Zotero and your browser after updating.

Any further problems let us know & thanks for reporting
  • Hi, the Internet Archive URL saves are working fine now, thanks!

but... when I save a link, for example:
    http://web.archive.org/web/20001204093600/http://my.netscape.com/publish/formats/rss-spec-0.91.html
it saves it pretty decent, except for the link itself!

I would like to include the above link in my reference list, so now I manually add all IA URLs.

PS: in an ideal world Zotero would automatically put IA URLs in an Item Type: Archived Website or something similar.

    Thanks for the great work!
