Citations don't work in Word

Hej,

I have a problem with my citations in MS Word 2010. I can't change or refresh my citations. I always get "Sie müssen den Cursor in einer Zotero-Zitation positionieren, um sie zu bearbeiten", if I want to change a citation.
Report ID: 1469646209
I use Word 2010; Firefox 19.0, Zotero 3.0.14 and Zotero Word for Windows Integration 3.1.11.
  • You do have you cursor in side a citation when you try this?

Are you sure your citations are "live" - i.e. can you insert a bibliography?
  • yes, I have the cursor inside a citation. It worked before, so I'm wondering what's wrong.

what means "live" exactly and how can I change this? This seems to be the problem, I can't insert a bibliography.
  • So if you click "insert bibliography" you get a "you first need to insert a citation" (or so) warning?

If so, it sounds like for some reason Zotero doesn't recognize your citations as Zotero citations anymore. I wouldn't know of a way to repair this that doesn't include re-inserting all citations. Do you have a recent back-up of the paper?
There aren't many ways to remove the link between Zotero and a Word document. Clicking "Remove Field Codes" in the plugin would be one way, but that displays a clear warning. Saving the file in an unsupported format like RTF would also have that effect, as would opening and saving it in Open or Libre Office.
  • no, it puts this in: {Bibliography}

    oh no!
I'm sure, that I didn't use "remove field codes" and I didn't change the format.
I have this problem also with an older version of the document. At the time I saved this version, the citations worked.
  • that's actually probably good news. If it didn't recognize the citations at all it'd throw an error.
    Try running through these
    http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting#debugging_broken_documents
If that doesn't help, provide an error report ID from Zotero after trying to insert a bibliography:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs#provide_a_report_id
  • okay, I'll try that.

    Thank you!
  • So, I run through these advices, but it didn't work. I sent a new report with the ID: 229459950
  • hm.
I created a new document and saved it as .odt. In this new document the citations don't work either. In a version saved as .docx they work.
  • wait, why are you saving the document as .odt? That would cause citations to break, yes.
