advanced search & indexing problem

I have about 500 indexed items in my library, 19 partially indexed, and about 150 unindexed. Often, however, my advanced searches do not retrieve documents accurately. For example, even for an indexed item, when I search for a word under "attachment content," zotero does not identify up that file. Sometimes, when I'm just searching for "creator," zotero doesn't bring up all the files by creator (even though this is clearly in the zotero database). And any phrase searches, like "the law of contracts" do not work at all, even for phrases that I know are in the attachments of indexed items.
The only thing i can think of is that it says I have only 163,920 words indexed, which seems like a low number given how many documents I have (some are 800 page books). Any advice? Many thanks,
  • The indexing only checks a small number of pages from the beginning of the document. The default is 100 and can be changed in the Zotero preferences.
  • My indexing is set to index maximum of 100,000 pages per document, and many of my articles are under 100 pages anyway. Shouldn't all the articles of about 30 pages therefore be fully indexed? This doesn't appear to be the case because even very simple searches do not work 100% accurately. Any thoughts?
  • First, check your database integrity in the Advanced pane of the Zotero preferences.

If that checks out, let's focus on the creator issue first, since that's the most straightforward. Can you provide a Debug ID for an advanced search by creator that doesn't work?
  • Many thanks for your instructions
I checked database integrity - there is no problem.
I performed the action you requested, and the debug id is: D2045751065.

This isn't an official version of Zotero. We don't provide support for MLZ, but if you put "[MLZ]" in the thread title (which you should always do if you're using MLZ) fbennett may come along to help.

If you can reproduce this in the official version of Zotero we'd be happy to help.
  • @hiroaragaki: If you send me a Zotero message with your email (via the "Inbox" link at the top of this page, using my Zotero ID), we can look at the issue together, and either pin down the problem or get your data running in official Zotero for further testing.
  • Dear Mr. Stillman & fbennett:
Many thanks for both of your responses. I'm still putting my head around how MLZ works with Zotero; sorry about the confusion. I will contact fbennett separately.
  • Where do you find list of articles not indexed?
  • you can't easily, though you can do an advanced search for attachment-content -- does not contain --- e
(or some other common letter), check the include parent item box and search. This may also give you items without any attachment, though.
