best way for multiple users?

Hi, if I have multiple users for a db is this the best way?

1. sync with same zotero account
2. use webdav on own server for file syncing
3. use firefoxfolder on each pc for their copy of the db

unfortunately there is no option to use the db with multiple users at the same time :(

thx
  • The best way would be to use a group library and each user should have a separate user account.

Your setup should work as well. I do not understand what you mean by "unfortunately there is no option to use the db with multiple users at the same time". Please be as specific as possible when asking questions so it is easier to provide answers.
  • Well 2+ people cannot use the same db file at once. Otherwise I'd just put that thing on a server and done...
  • yeah, that's a general sqlite limitation, though.

  • Ok, thanks anyway. All I can say is that the people at my university love Zotero ;) Good Job!
  • and you can't share files in a group using webDAV, so groups wouldn't work. I don't see any reason you need your 3. - there's no problem with it, but since you're using regular sync there's no reason to not move the Zotero folder to a custom location if you prefer that.
  • Ok I gotta ask again:

Is there a way for a group of people to work with a MasterDB which is on the Zotero Space at the same time + can everyone of them have the whole db at their pc?

I don't really understand what you're asking. You can either use your setup (shared single account, synced with Zotero server and WebDAV) or you can use a group (multiple accounts, synced with Zotero server and Zotero File Storage). If those aren't satisfactory for some reason, you'll have to explain why.
  • Well we have a group of x people and they all work with one big database, but they need to work on it in parallel, so sometimes at the same time. And due to internet speed some need the whole database on their computers so that they dont have to download the whole thing everytime, just sync for minor changes.
Is that what the group function does?
  • Both groups and WebDAV work that way. You will always have the whole DB on your computer.
  • If I have multiple users accessing the same (rather large) library then I understand, from the above discussion, that the best option is for each user to create their own account and to use a group library. Does this solution work if only the main user (the owner of the database/principal researcher) has unlimited Zotero storage, while the other users (research assistants) do not? For example, even though I am using the free Zotero account and only have 300mb, can I access the entire group library that would be, say, 3GB?

Sorry if the answer is obvious. Please let me know if I need to clarify anything.
  • answer to all of this is yes: yes it's the best way and yes, only the group owner's storage matters.
