How to get Zotero "Z" icon to appear bottom right//split screen not appearing

I work with a friend in Guatemala who is a research assistant. He enters bibliographic data into zotero for me. His computer skills are slim. He recently had his lap-top purged of viruses and other "issues" by a third party and he now has trouble with Zotero. In particular, when he opens Zotero on his PC he only gets the top page. The "Z" or Zotero icon on the bottom right hand corner that you click to get the split screen does not appear. I am in the US and can't explore his laptop from here. So, I am not too sure what's up. And, its a little difficult to communicate to him how to explore possible troubleshooting. So, basic question is if there are any basic/quick steps we might take to get the Zotero icon to show up in the bottom right and to get the split screen to appear so we can get back to work? Thanx.

What exactly do you mean by "top page" and "opens Zotero"? And are we talking about Zotero for Firefox or Zotero Standalone? Zotero icon on the bottom right corner appears only in Zotero for Firefox.

Assuming that you are talking about Firefox browser and Zotero installed as a Firefox plugin. First make sure that Zotero is installed (Firefox menu -> Addons). If it is, then perhaps the addons bar is hidden in Firefox. To show it, go to Firefox menu -> Options -> Add-on bar or (Ctrl + /). If the addon bar is showing and Zotero is installed then the easiest thing to do would be to try and re-install Zotero. Remove it first and then install from zotero.org.

If you do not care about saving the current library (e.g. it is all synced), then you can just create a fresh Firefox profile and install Zotero. All settings will be cleared so it's most likely to succeed. For creating a fresh Firefox profile, see http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
