Mysterious tags

Is there a way to track admin activity?

In other words: can I see a report of who has done what to our group library?

We have a limited number of admins and yet strange tags have shown up that no one of us would have assigned.
  • I do not think that you can see who added tags.
  • And there's no way to track what admins have done? There's no report of recent activity?

Do you know of any way tags could have appeared in our library? One of our admins suggested that it may have something to do with WorldCat (from which we originally got some of our entries). If the original WorldCat entry was updated with a tag, could that update affect our library?
  • We think we tracked down that these mystery tags are coming to us through ProQuest.

We've got it under control. Thanks for your help!
  • Hello, I have the same problem, mysterious tags which have nothing to do with the subject area of texts in my library (art history) appear. Examples of rogue tags 'lymph nodes', 'Aging', 'mice, inbred'.
These terms should not even automatically be generated by my texts as they are on the wrong subject. It is as if a medical text has cross generated through my tags. If i click on the rogue tag 'no items found' therefore the source is invisible. Can anyone help?
  • Well, I'm not a developer -- but I'll try to help (and maybe a developer will jump in and tell us how we're doing)....

We think our mystery tags were coming in from articles we added from ProQuest. We think this because we followed back one of the articles that had the mystery tags and found it had Subject lines, etc. that corresponded to the mystery tags.

We didn't find any way other than manually squashing the mystery tags -- i.e. we've gone into our library and have deleted the tags we don't want -- and now that we're "clear" we're going to be on the look-out for mystery tags to re-occur and then we'll try to see what we could have done differently to keep them from occurring.

I don't know if this is at all helpful, but I thought I'd share our experience just in case it is.

    Does that help : http://www.zotero.org/support/collections_and_tags#automatic_tags ?
  • Yes, Gracile! That does look like it will help!

    Many, many thanks!
  • How do i manually squash a tag? bear in mind there is no text attached to the tag. Also, at what stage do i get a choice to de-select automatic tags? I may have an older version of Zotero as i cannot find this when editing an article or adding an article...
  • Goldsmiths: Were you able to get to the link Gracile provides above?

    http://www.zotero.org/support/collections_and_tags#automatic_tags

The "Manually Adding Tags" section discusses how to delete tags. The "Automatic Tags" section discusses how to de-select automatic tagging.

Those sections helped us. If they don't help your glitch, then you've gone well above my head and I'll bow out and let the developers help.

Good luck and happy new year!
  • My tags dont look the same as those shown in the link- i have no multi coloured button! thanks for attempts at help Santayana...hope i'm not beyond help, calling developers...help me!!!
  • You are very welcome, Goldsmiths.

I've had good experiences with the Zotero community. I'm sure you'll get the help you need.

    Ever onward!
  • GoldsmithsCurating: Can you see the Tag Selector: http://www.zotero.org/support/collections_and_tags#the_tag_selector ? At the bottom of the collections column you should see some dots. Those dots function to show or hide the tag selector.
  • But, anyway, to disable automatic tags from being saved, you've to uncheck an option in the Zotero Prefs pane ("General" tab -> "Miscellanous"): http://www.zotero.org/support/preferences/general
