Faulty presentation

Hello there,

I am a fairly new user here and will really appreciate assistance in solving two erroneous conditions here. Before I go on, perhaps it's useful to know the citation style I employ is the Harvard – Leeds Metropolitan University.

Error #1: There’s too much gap throughout when I block citation. Is there a way to close the gaps?

For example:
Pilgrimage is one of the earliest, non-economic forms of travelling in search of the sacred and holy
(Jackowski & Smith, 1992; Rinschede, 1992; Vukonić, 1996; Gupta, 1999; Reader, 2007; Wichasin, 2009).
However, it has transformed over time and is recognised as “religious tourism” (Jackowski & Smith, 1992; Rinschede, 1992; Smith, 1992; Olsen & Timothy, 2006; Timothy & Boyd, 2006; Wichasin, 2009; Collins-Kreiner, 2010).

Error #2: The name of the author.

For example:
The author’s name is Tan (surname), Chee Beng (given name).
It should appear as “(Tan, 2013)” but it keeps showing “(C. B. Tan, 2013)” each time I open up the file.

Your assistance will be much appreciated, thank you very much!

I'm not sure what you mean in your first question. Can you place a screenshot on a service like http:://imgur.com and post the URL back here?

On the author's name, check references in your document that include an author with surname "Tan". If the names do not exactly match, you will get the effect that you are seeing in citations with that style -- it is intentional, and serves to distinguish different authors with the same surname.
  • Thank you very much for responding, fbennett and Dan Stillman.

    Dear fbennett,

For the first error, here is the direct link: http://i.imgur.com/K9cTe.png
I hope it sheds some light...

As for the second error, I went through the library to check if there's inconsistency but none. And although it's intentional, it's not serving any purpose because there's only one Tan, really :(

Please tell us your operating system, word processor version, and Zotero version. Are your two problems exhibited in the main text body or in some table or note?

Please also try starting a completely new document. Type a few words and insert the reference in problem one. Does the citation still jump to a new line? Type a few more words and insert the Tan citation. Does the citation still display as GB Tan? Type a few more words and insert another single-author citation from a different author. Does that citation appear with last name and initials?

The disambiguation is needed for times when a manuscript contains two citations to items by two authors with the same last name. There are only a few reasons for the last name and initials to be inserted. One is the normal disambiguation process mentioned above. Another is when there are duplicate records in the Zotero database, a citation to a duplicate record was inserted more than once and to different versions of the duplicate record. The other possibility is that the style you are using will always insert author names and initials.
  • Hi DWL-SDCA,

    Thank you for responding.

Operating systems: Mac (OSX 10.6.8) and Windows Vista
Word processor version: 3.5.6 for Mac and 3.1.9 for Windows
    Zotero standalone version: 3.0.8

The two problems are found in the main text body.

I have tried starting a new document. When I do, the error #1 (gap) still takes place, however, error #2 (name) seems resolved.
  • updated Zotero to the most current version (3.0.11.1) error #1 has been fixed for a while.
  • Hello all,
I hope this finds you well and thank you for responding!

Think I've finally found a way to 'fix' error #1 and that is through 'remove codes'! :D

DWL-SDCA - sorry I missed the last part of your reply, on disambiguation, appreciate your explanation!

adamsmith - I've updated zotero for both my computers and 'remove codes' seems to be the way! :D

I hope this will be helpful for anyone who comes across the same problem in the future.

And thanks again for all of your responses! :)
