"highlighted citation no longer exists in your Zotero database" Report ID: 654872155

Report ID: 654872155

I frequently receive an error report that reads:

Item 1 in the highlighted citation no longer exists in your Zotero database. Do you want to select a substitute item?
Clicking “No” will delete the field codes for citations containing this item, preserving the citation text but deleting it from your bibliography.

This usually happens when I have worked on a document on one computer and then open it to continue working on another computer. It's very time consuming to re-enter all the citations. Surely there's a fix for this problem. Any help will be very much appreciated.
  • Do you have "Store references in document" checked in the Zotero document preferences (i.e. the cog icon on the Zotero toolbar in Word)?
  • I did have it checked. When I uncheck it, nothing seems to change.
