how to link Word document with citations to shared Zotero file

My colleague drafted a paper and inserted all the citations using zotero. She then shared the paper with me and invited me to the group containing the library she created. How can I get the two to link and speak to each other? I can't seem to get the bibliographic output style to change in the document after adjusting my preferences in zotero. I installed the Word add on. Thanks for any help.
  • have you synced your library - i.e. do you see the group in your local version of Zotero?
  • no--how do I do that? I am brand new and have watched the same intro video 5 times but haven't figured out where to go for real instructions. Thank you!!
  • The first thing is - you have installed Zotero, right?
As opposed to say, Refworks, Zotero requires a local client - either Zotero standalone or the Zotero FF add-on. These are separate from the Zotero word plugin (which you say you have installed).
Once that is done, see the info on syncing here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/sync
You only need data syncing for your purposes (you may or may not be interested in file syncing, but it's unrelated to what you're trying to do at the moment).
    Hope that helps.
  • Thanks--I have installed Zotero FF add-on and followed your instructions and now have the group libraries synched. I still can't get the Word doc to synch, however. The add-ons in Word don't seem to do anything when I click on them. I assume I would use the bibliographic management icon to adjust style. Thanks again.
  • Try re-installing the word add-on.
What's the set-up you're using (OS, Word, FF versions)?
What happens when you click a button in the Word add-on (start by trying this in a new document, not the one your friend sent you)?
  • Re-installing the add-on seemed to fix the problem. Thanks so much for your help and for attending to this forum so diligently!!

the other Q is I have to documents that I put reference for them separately . how can I merge them together without re-do all the referencing?
    thanks
  • How about in a new document? Create a document, insert a reference, save and close, re-open: If you insert a new reference, does it work & appear as 2? If so, this is a problemn specific to your 46 refs document.
    Which word processor, which OS?

You can merge documents just by copy&pasting one behind the other.
