Pubmed translator

Hello,

I have a problem with the pubmed translator. When I click on the icon to import a single reference from pubmed, the red box (bottom right) appears as if it were importing the reference but no text appears in it and it does not say "saving item". Within the Zotero library the reference does not appear. This happens only with pubmed as far as I can tell. There is NO error message. It does work correctly on my home computer which makes me think it is a local problem. This was not a problem a month or two ago. I have run through the troubleshooting guide as follows:

1: Icon present so no problem there,
2: known translator issues seem not to be relevant though I have tried the update as suggested in the thread on Pubmed linked to from the know translator issues page.
3: Zotero updated
4: Firefox updated. I was on the firefox beta channel but reverting to the standard release has not solved the problem
5: Updated and no change
6: Translator displayed is NCBI(Pubmed)
7: Clock is ok
8: No incompatible addons from the published list and no change with all add-ons disabled
9: Not applicable
10: Not applicable

I am on firefox 17.0.1, using zotero standalone and firefox extension.

Any help appreciated.
  • you can create an error report ID even when there is no error message displayed by Zotero, unless the option is greyed out. Retrigger the error and follow the instructions:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs#provide_a_report_id

Try this without Standalone and see if it makes a difference.
  • Thank you Adam. I have a report Id but since this has no date that I can see I am not sure if it is pertinent to the actual problem. Anyway here goes. The report is generated in standalone as I can see no other way on the webpage ofr my library. Report id: 266959136

  • Dan, Simon - anything in that report?
  • No.

Ajuydog: Provide a Debug ID for a save attempt that's failing.
  • Hello again, apologies for not keeping up quickly.

Debug ID is D905051072. Several attempt to provide a debug ID were unsuccessful as nothing logged despite it being enabled. I tried to reproduce the bug report but have not been able to.
  • One further attempt to obtain a debug ID. I closed Standalone and opened Zotero preferences from Firefox's Add-on manager. By doing it from here I am able to generate a debug ID (Debug ID is D908882389).

Using Standalone, the Debug ID does not log anything on attempting to save from pubmed.

    Mystery to me!
  • Upgrade to Zotero for Firefox 3.0.11 and try again, and provide another Debug ID from there if it fails.
  • Thank you Dan that works, now.
I must say, I had ensured that standalone was up to date without realising that Zotero for firefox would need to be updated separately (it was set to default for automatic updates). Also, Standalone tells me that word for windows add-on is not installed despite it appearing in word and working perfectly. I suspect this too is due to diferences in standalone and Z for firefox. Am I missing something in aligning the two versions of Z?
  • Zotero for FF will auto-update with default settings. If you had initially installed it form mozilla.org rather than zotero.org updates are currently lagging due to problems at mozilla - since you presumably updated by installing from zotero.org that should now be fixed.

Where does SA tell you that the Word add-on isn't installed? It typically installs per default.
  • Actually I updated from the add-on in FF, rather than zotero.org as I can only find download options but no update option on zotero.org (it was already downloaded).

SA says that Word add-on is not installed in: Actions, preferences, cite on the "Word processors" tab. "The Zotero Word for Windows add-on is not currently installed"
  • odd - if citations work with just Standalone open I'd leave that be, but if it bothers you, just clicking on "reinstall word processor plugin" will fix it.

As for the add-on: I see that mozilla has just updated the version there to 3.0.11, that's why the update went through. I'd still recommend switching over to the channel on zotero.org - just re-download and install zotero from zotero.org - it will not affect any of your data, but you'll get future updates more reliably & quickly.
  • I had the same problem. It extended to several other translators than PubMed, including Google Scholar. The problem was by upgrading from Zotero 3.0.8 to 3.0.11.
An added benefit of Ajuydog's post is that I became aware of Zotero Standalone. It is a lot more convenient than the Firefox extension!
  • Sorry, I meant to say my translator problem was SOLVED by upgrading to 3.0.11
