Special characters in author names

Hi all,

I have a problem with author names containing special characters such as Å and ó . Basically the current translator does not translate these special characters to the correct bibtex code. For example, for the characters previously mentioned \{AA} and \'{o}. I tried to solve this by inputting the correct bibtex code into the author field which basically did not work since the translation tries to translate the backslashes and brackets.

Until now I have avoided the issue and left the cumbersome zotero translation and would delay fixing these errors until the end of my work. However, now even this conflicted while compiling the code. I was about to make a script to basically fix this after each export, but since I do it so many times in an incremental work seems like a loss of time for something that could be easily fixed. I could fix it in the translator, but since it gets removed on each update does not seem to make much sense.

In the end I would like to ask if someone has a working solution for this or if not to propose this fix to zotero developers.

Thank you for your help!
  • Zotero exports utf-8 to bibtex by default, as many more modern bibtex implementations can read that.
If you need diacritics et al converted to bibtex code, check "Display character encoding option on export" in the "Export" tab of the Zotero preferences and then on exporting the bibtex set the encoding to ISO 8859-1
  • If you choose an export character set other than UTF-8, these will already be transcribed to TeX entitities: {\r A} and {\'o}.
  • Thank you adamsmith and noksagt.

I didn't know about the option to choose encoding upon export but thought I had tried changing the encoding a while back.

Anyhow, it's good that it was just a mistake of mine.

    Thanks again, working perfectly now.
