AllAfrica.com translator does not work

Trying to save an article from allafrica.com gives an error message
"Could not save item. An error occurred while saving the item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information." (Actually, the messages misspells 'occurred' as 'occured' but that's a minor point.)

An example URL is http://allafrica.com/stories/201201310390.html

There was a previous report of this issue (http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/14189/africacom/) but it was apparently never resolved.

I'm using Firefox 9.0.1 and Zotero 2.1.10, Windows 7 64-bit.

The report error ID is 1779120185.
  • confirmed. I don't think this is the old issue - the site has been completely redesigned recently and needs a complete translator re-write. That will take some time.
  • This is fixed now - the translator should auto-update within 24hs or you can manually update from the general tab of the Zotero preferences.
The translator should also cover searches.
    Any trouble let me know.
  • I am getting the same error message as MikeBlyth. An example would be:

    http://allafrica.com/stories/201206250307.html

I am using Windows 7, Firefox 17.0, and my Zotero is 3.0.11.

    Thanks.
  • should work & does for me.
I assume you've restarted FF and tried again?
If so, could we get an error report ID:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs#provide_a_report_id
  • I have tried that. The code is: 1454681611
  • Dan, Simon - anything helpful in there?
  • [JavaScript Error: "No title specified for item" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/translation/translate.js" line: 560}]"
  • odd, can't make out any problem.
If you're interested in helping me figure this out,
could you install this little bookmarklet:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/848981/it/xp/xp.html
(installation instructions are on the site - no browser restart required).

Then got to the AllAfrica article, click the bookmark you created and your cursor will turn into a hand.
With that hand click on the headline of the article and a yellow window will open, copy the content of that window here - it'll be something like:
    //div[@class="columns"]/div[@class="content"]/div[contains(@class, "column") and contains(@class, "main")]/div[@class="content"]/div[contains(@class, "section") and contains(@class, "article")]/div[@class="content"]/div[@class="heading"]/h1
  • //div[@class="columns"]/div[@class="content"]/div[contains(@class, "column") and contains(@class, "main")]/div[@class="content"]/div[contains(@class, "section") and contains(@class, "article")]/div[@class="content"]/div[@class="heading"]/h1

This is a new article, but I get the same error message regardless (I have also double-checked and it is working for NYT, JSTOR, etc).

    Thanks,

    Will
  • OK, the problem are the ads on the page - I can see if we can work around that, but in the meantime, if you have ad-block plus (or similar) on, the translator will work.
  • Amazing. Have installed adblock plus and it works fine. Thanks very much.
  • This should now work correctly without using adblock. Your translator will automatically update within 24 hours or you can update manually via Preferences... -> General -> Update Now
