pdf item dissapears with sync

Hi,

if I add a journal paper trough firefox to Zotero it is set to grab the pdf and create a snapshot item with the library entry.

As soon as Zotero gets synced, the pdf item disappears.
Deleating the library entry from all (standalone, firefox plugin and zotero server) saving the entry again in either standalone or firefox, the pdf full text disappears again.

Other papers from this journal, I saved the other day are fine and have the pdf item attached.

Help is really appreachiated.
Anna
  • "disappear" from where? In Zotero (standalone / Firefox) or do you mean that you can't see the pdf in your online library?
  • It disappears from Standalone and firefox.

All other previous entries (same Journal) have 2 items attached, a snapshot and Full Text pdf.

I checked available storage space on Zotero and there is plenty left.
  • Ok.Can you provide a URL?
I'm not sure I can help you more but a report ID might be helpful for the devs.
  • Tried to add another paper from this journal to my library and the pdf item got safed, both in firefox and the standalone.
Tried again with the 2 files causing problems earlier today and also their pdfs got safed.

However, with another journal the problem is again there:
    http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/1522-2586%28200007%2912:1%3C20::AID-JMRI3%3E3.0.CO;2-Y/abstract

Nevertheless there is a error report:
    2028487978

    Journal was this one:
    http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/%28ISSN%291522-2594
  • Restart your computer, upgrade to Firefox 16.0.2, and try again. You can also try disabling your other Firefox extensions.

Also temporarily disable auto-sync in the Sync pane of the Zotero preferences to confirm when this is actually happening, since there's really no way for syncing to delete a newly created local item.

If you really think this happen during syncing, provide a Debug ID for a sync operation that causes this.
  • Updated Firefox and deaktivated other extensions.
Disabled auto-sync and tried again in Firefox and the standalone.

When the paper gets downloaded into the library, a pdf called "Full Text" appears as an item, but if I try to click on it, it returns an error message it doesn't exist.
Within some seconds the pdf item then disappears so I suspect it never got saved.

Then I wonder why it saved two papers with the pdf yesterday.

    Todays ID is: 10940929
  • do you have access to the pdf? As in can you download it manually?
  • OK, so this isn't related to syncing.

Provide a Debug ID for a save attempt, up through when the PDF attachment is deleted. (The attachment gets deleted automatically if the file isn't actually a PDF.)
  • Debug ID, not Report ID. Follow my link.
  • Downloaded PDF did not have MIME type 'application/pdf' in Attachments.importFromURL()
The PDF isn't being successfully downloaded for some reason—I'd guess because of an issue related to Standalone.

Does this work if you close Standalone and try to save in Zotero for Firefox? If not, provide a Debug ID for that too.

And you're sure you're either logged into the site or connected via a VPN? (Which one?)

According to your debug output you're accessing http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com directly, with no proxy, which would mean http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/mrm.24494/pdf would have to display the PDF for you (without Zotero redirecting you automatically through a proxy).
  • I should be logged into the side through a universities account.
As I can just download the pdf when clicking on it, I assume the login is not the problem.

And it did work before, yesterday randomly for 2 papers and for most of the other papers the days before.
  • Can you install the latest 3.0 Branch dev XPI (not the trunk) into Firefox and generate another Debug ID with that? I've added some extra debugging that may help us out here.
  • OK, so it looks like for some reason you're getting an interim page from the site:

(2)(+0008823): Downloaded PDF did not have MIME type 'application/pdf' in Attachments.importFromURL()

    (3)(+0000000): <html><head>
    <title>Please be patient</title>
    <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">

    </head

Someone will have to look into this to see if there's anything we can do on our end.
  • I suspect this might be my firewall...

It sometimes scanns documents and returns
    <title>Please be patient</title>

This happens if I try to download the paper manually.
Just tried with another paper from the same journal and it worked fine.

I guess the only way around this is to manually download the paper and link it back in zotero.
  • Yeah, we can't do anything about that, then.

(Also note that Wiley's iframe makes this harder than it would be otherwise. If they were displaying the PDF directly, you could drag from the favicon at the left of the address bar onto an item in Zotero, but you don't want to do that from the parent HTML page. With some PDF plugins you might be able to right-click on the PDF iframe and choose This Frame -> Show Only This Frame to view the PDF directly, but if not then manually downloading the PDF and dragging the downloaded file back into Zotero is probably your best bet.)
  • you can look at the Zotfile plugin that will - among other things - facilitate the process of downloading and attaching:

  • Thanks a lot for all the help!
