importing a refworks library

OK, I'm new. I'm in the final stages of a 300 page dissertation with over 1100 footnotes and 400+ sources. Can someone tell me how easy it is to import a refworks library into Zotero and how to do it? I use SBL citation style, and am also not sure yet how will zotero works with that. I have searched the site for this information and cannot find it.
  • RefWorks can export RIS. In Zotero, Gear icon -> Import

  • Switching from RefWorks to Zotero is generally a very wise choice, but changing your reference manager in the final stages of your dissertation is very likely a bad idea unless RefWorks is giving you terrible trouble.
So unless you're already spending a lot of time fixing RefWorks issues I'd wait until your dissertation is finished and switch then. Even for the next step - presumably editing it for a book manuscript - switching over could make sense, definitely for your next project.

One of the biggest obstacles will be that Zotero can import your database, but will not read any of the citations imported with Refworks, so you'd have to re-insert every single one of your 1100 footnotes that contains a citation/reference.
  • I'm in the same boat but in an earlier phase of dissertation -- only two chapters are messed up. Refworks last update isn't working -- I've spent days and days (and days) trying to fix. I used RW on another computer and then it mucked up my text and citations. Nothing seems to work. You may see more disgruntled refworks folks here.
