Safari + Zotero Standalone 3: can't save a PDF dirtectly?

The following link is to an article through a journal site:
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/dvdy.20276/pdf

The PDF will open up within the Safari browser, and the Zotero button is present, just to the left of URL. But it appears "grayed out," and clicking over it doesn't activate anything. Any ideas why? The PDF is open, so shouldn't be any proxy issues.

I am able to manually download the PDF, move it into Zotero's library, and then get the metadata. But I would think this workflow should be able to be more-straightforward.

Any thoughts? Thanks!
  • If you go to http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/dvdy.20276/full, you can click the button and Zotero will save the citation and attach the PDF.

We are exploring ways to improve Zotero's ability to save PDFs directly with attached metadata, but there are some technical complications to this.
  • Safari provides a way to save pdf directly into Download folder. Could we utilize this feature and make Zotero directly save pdf into its library in a similar way? I'm in great need of this feature and hope to contribute to it.
  • have a look at Zotfile - you can use it to automatically attach the last PDF you saved to the Download folder to a Zotero item.

The only alternative currently is to save the PDF and drag it to Zotero. As Simon says, that's a temporary limitation - no one considers this an acceptable state of affairs.
  • Thanks adam. Zotfile is something like "watch folder" in Mendeley. It maybe useful but sometimes bring me trouble as I don't really want all the pdf files in my Download folder to be synced into the library. We should really give the choice to the customer.
  • That's misunderstanding of Zotfile. It attaches PDFs downloaded into the Download folder on demand, one-by-one so no, it's not the same as a watched folder in Mendeley et al.
