Duplicate detection for cases

Duplicate detection is a valuable tool, but I just noticed that it reported a lower court opinion and an upper court opinion of the same case as duplicates. In other words,Zotero doesn't seem to take any of the reporter, reporter volume, date decided, or court into account in determining duplicates.
  • Duplicates checking in MLZ discriminates on volume and reporter. However, MLZ uses different styles for legal writing, and some knowledge of the Abbreviation Filter plugin is needed to produce correct legal citations. MLZ is not the official Zotero release, and cannot be supported by the core team: you would be reliant on other MLZ users and myself for support. Documentation sufficient to get a handle on the Abbreviation Filter is in draft, and should be ready by the end of this month, if you're interested.
  • You can't teach an old dog a new trick, so I'm a little hesitant to migrate to a new platform from something that I'm already accustomed to.

That being said, does MLZ cater towards legal scholars?
  • yes it does - it's currently the only way to do reliable legal citations in Zotero:

and I'd think of it more of a variation on an old trick rather than a new one ;-)
  • That said, obviously Zotero should (and likely will) improve duplicate selection, it's just that because of the exitence of Frank's project, improving issues specific to legal citations isn't super high on the agenda of "mainstream" Zotero.
