Style Error: Bone

Hi,

I appreciate all the work put into Zotero and getting the CSL right. I'm using Bone as the citation style and it doesn't turn out quite right. Main issues are
- journal titles: not abbreviated, some don't appear
- title of article: sentence structure vs. caps title format
- spacing at volume numbering
- doi: appearing when it should not be there
- spacing after [] numbering
- author initials: stops/dots with initials vs none

What I have from Zotero in my bibliography:
[1] Faulkner RA, Bailey DA. Osteoporosis: a pediatric concern? Optimizing bone mass and strength: the role of physical activity and nutrition during growth 2007;51:1–12.
[2] Rachner TD, Khosla S, Hofbauer LC. Osteoporosis: now and the future. The Lancet 2011;377:1276–87.

I've attached a few abbreviation sources, FYI,
Journal abbreviations source
Journal names should be abbreviated according to
Index Medicus journal abbreviations: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/lji.html ;
List of title word abbreviations: http://www.issn.org/2-22661-LTWA-online.php ;
CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service): http://www.cas.org/content/references/corejournals.

Thanks for the help.
  • if you check the journal, though, that's not actually the style they follow. From a recently published article:
    [13] Brazier JE, Harper R, Jones NM, O'Cathain A, Thomas KJ, Usherwood T, et al. Validating the SF-36 health survey questionnaire: new outcome measure for primary care. BMJ 1992;305:160-4.
    [14] Bessette L, Jean S, Davison KS, Roy S, Ste-Marie LG, Brown JP. Factors influencing the treatment of osteoporosis following fragility fracture. Osteoporos Int 2009;20:1911-9.

    Which looks in line with what you have above. You can check with their editors if they've recently changed - the style you link to is on the Zotero repository as "Elsevier (with titles)".

    On Journal abbreviations see here:

  • Yes, I see what you mean. But what about the different title (sentence vs caps, i.e. The new outcome measure vs. The New Outcome Measure) is that something I correct in my info from my own database? I also can't seem to update my Bone csl on my Zotero Standalone. It is now dated as 4/3/2012.

    Can I also request for a new style within this same discussion? Stle for Ostoeporosis International journal.

    Thank you.
  • Zotero will convert titles from sentence case to title case (headline capitalization) when required, but not the other way around, so yes, you should adjust titles to sentence case in your database.
    (Sentence Case capitalization can't be automated because there is no way to recognize proper nouns).

    When you say "can't update" - what exactly is the problem?

    The style for "Osteoporosis International" is Springer Vancouver from the repository. If that's not the case, please start a new thread after reading this: https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/wiki/Requesting-Styles
  • My Zotero Standalone shows the updated date as 4/3/2012 even though I just replaced the csl with the current updated on (dated 2012-09-28). I tried to delete it too but the csl is still there. I'm going to leave it as it is for now...

    Thanks for the info on the Osteoporosis International csl. It works for me.
  • how did you "replace" the CSL? The best way to go is to just download the CSL and double-click it - it will auto install in Zotero.
    You can also install CSLs using the style manager in the preferences under Cite-->Styles. I wouldn't recommend fiddling with the actual files in the Zotero/styles folder.
  • I used both the auto install and through preferences Cite-->Style. No changes.

    I just used Springer Vancouver on my paper but not getting the journal abbreviations for all the citations. Is it something I did/didn't do? I download pdfs and ask Zotero to retrieve the pdf metadata. Is that why my bibliography is not consistent in citing?
  • yeah - retrieve metadata is about the least reliable way to get data into Zotero - the data comes from google scholar and their data is frequently incomplete.
    As linked to above, Zotero will print - including for Springer Vancouver - whatever is in the Journal abbr. field.
