Update Zotero to 3.0.10 (now) to work with Firefox 17

This has been mentioned a few times lately deep within forum threads but I think that it needs to be clearly stated. The final version of FF 17 isn't due until late November and the Zotero developers say that there will be a new Zotero version that will work with the new FF.

FireFox 17 only recently became a beta status.

I am on the _release_ update channel. However, I have been offered FF 17 two times lately. I didn't update FF because I read most of the Zotero forum threads and I believed the warning. The "Try Out New Features Offer" has come through FF on both my work and home computers (Mac 10.8.2 , FF 16).

Make a copy of your Zotero directory before you do anything.

  • @Dan, Simon - could we make this (or something comparable) sticky at the top? DWL is right that a lot of people are upgrading to FF 17 more or less without realizing it.

    Offered how?

The offer comes through FF, just as I'm notified of any other FF update opportunity. I don't know how I can better describe the process. I have become familiar with firefox update notices since there have been many updates over the past year -- it seems like every 4 to 6 weeks. The wording of the first one stressed the 'try out the new' and mentioned FF 17. The one that came a few days later notified me that an update is available but didn't mention that it was an update to the beta 17. All the machines in my office are Macs and we all use FireFox. Each of the systems received the most recent update offer.
  • And app.update.channel in about:config is set to "release"? It sounds like something is just wrong with your installations. We've seen this happen for people who were on the beta channel previously.
  • Yes, the app.update.channel is set to "release". We have one machine that is set to "beta" so that we may test the appearance and behavior of our websites on different browsers and browser versions.

None of the other machines have ever been on the beta channel. I promise.

Last night, as a part of a session on paraphrasing, plagiarism and citing sources, I was showing Zotero to a class of 140 students. I asked them to check their FF version in "about FireFox" 12 of them had FF 17 and had the update channel set to release. (There were quite a few others who had FF 17 and had the update channel set to aurora or beta.)

As an aside, very few of the undergrads used any citation management software. Most used the built-in Microsoft Word citation utility. I need to find a way to change their mindset.

I am not suggesting that there is anything can do about this. I started this discussion in a friendly attempt to save Zotero users from the need to downgrade their FF and to save myself (and other forum readers) from reading all of the support requests that are caused by the FF 17 issue.

Zotero 3.0.9 is now out with Firefox 17 compatibility. Currently it should work with Firefox 18 beta as well, but that might change before Firefox 18 is released.

(The Standalone version of 3.0.9 will be out in a day or two once we get our code-signing certificate working again.)
  • @Dan, could you create a 3.0.9 tag on github?
  • Am using Word 2010 and it is not supported. Is this why there is no toolbar for Zotero on Word, and when will I be able to do this?
  • motoro: Start a new thread. Word 2010 is certainly supported.
