problems when I insert citations in word

As soon as I insert a citation, all of the references pop out. I only click the "add citation" button, but I do not know why the references are coming out between paragraph. Every time I try to insert a citation, the references pop out at the same spot between paragraphs.

Is there something wrong?
  • what do you mean by "the references are coming out between paragraph[s]"?
Remember we can't see your screen, so describe what's going on in a bit more details.
Also, does this happen in a new document?
  • Thanks for reply.

This problem happens in a new document as well.

The problem is: after I insert a citation by clicking "add citation", the references come out automatically, somewhere between two paragraphs in my paper. It makes my paper messy and the point is that I do not need these references to come out as I add citation. If I add a new citation, the references will come out again and show up at the same spot where it came out first time. The same problem happens again and again when I am writing one paper.

    Hope it is clear now.
  • When you say "reference" - is that one bibliography entry? The whole bibliography?
Are you sure this happens when you start a new document - that would be very unusual.

If I understand you correctly, the most likely reason for what you're seeing is that a Zotero Bibliography marker is somewhere in your document and never got deleted properly.
If your in Word, you can show fields by clicking alt+F9, that should help you find and delete it.

If that's not it, could you make a screenshot of how that looks, upload it to a free image hosting site like imgur.com and post a link here.
  • The reference is whole bibliography.
I tried the new document, but the problem happened again. Also, I turn off "track and changes" in word, but the problem is still there.

I upload a pic and post the link here. Thanks
  • post it.

yeah, that looks very much like what I thought:
    so try this:

If I understand you correctly, the most likely reason for what you're seeing is that a Zotero Bibliography marker is somewhere in your document and never got deleted properly.
If your in Word, you can show fields by clicking alt+F9, that should help you find and delete it.
  • Ok, I click alt+F9, and it shows " ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"1e6ra4clus","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Morris, Schindehutte, Walton, & Allen, 2002)","plainCitation":"(Morris, Schindehutte, Walton, & Allen, 2002)"},"citationItems":[{"id":43,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/1135027/items/4ZQFU3DS"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/1135027/items/4ZQFU3DS"]}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"

    What should I do?
  • that's all as it should be - the question is - do you see anything appearing where that unwanted bibliography keeps appearing?
  • I may not get it.

After I click "alt+F9", the code appears everywhere I add citations. Also, if the unwanted bibliography show up, the code shows up as well as I click alt+F9.

Thank you for your patience on this. Are there steps I can follow on Zotero website so that I will not keep asking you?
  • I think I know how to do this. I deleted the codes where the problem is, and now the repeated references do not come out again.

    Thanks!
  • exactly, glad that worked.
