Chrome connector hangs on _some_ pages when invoked from the "Save Zotero Snapshot" context menu

Hi!

I am experiencing the problem that the Chrome connector consistently creates a new item when activated from the icon in the address bar, but the context menu "Save Zotero Snapshot" will only work on _some_ pages.

For example, this page will properly be created as a new item if invoke the "Save Zotero Snapshot".
http://www.ietf.org/

But for this page, "Save Zotero Snapshot" will simply show the "Saving Item" dialog indefinitely.

I have uploaded a report for this: 504642466

If I wait any amount of time and then close Zotero standalone, I get the message that "This item could not be saved because Zotero Standalone is not open or unreachable. Please open Zotero Standalone and try again."

If I launch Zotero standalone and then Firefox, and use the Zotero context menu>"Create New Item from Current Page", nothing happens. (No error messages or dialogs.)

If I use "Create new Item from Current page" in Firefox from the context menu, the page is properly stored.

The Chrome JavaScript console does not appear to show any related errors.

System: Windows 7 x64, Chrome 19 (Connector 3.03), Firefox 13 (Plugin 3.09), Zotero standalone 3.03. I am also using Word integration (which works perfectly).

Thank you.
  • for a start you should upgrade Zotero to 3.0.7
  • I mistyped above. My versions are:
    Zotero Standalone 3.07.
    Zotero Connector for Chrome 3.03
    Zotero Firefox plugin 3.07
    Zotero Winword integration 3.17
  • Hi there,
I'm having the same problem as JJesper. Was there a solution to this?
    Thanks
  • Hey there, also getting the same problems. Did you resolve it?

I have noticed that when I close that when I close the tab I am trying to save (after waiting in vain), this message appears in the "Report Errors":

[JavaScript Error: "Attempting to use a disconnected port object" {file: "extensions/miscellaneous_bindings.js" line: 187}]

[JavaScript Error: "undefined is not a function" {file: "chrome-extension://jciblakmllnhbhjjgkbkeihelcndmgnh/zotero.js" line: 95}]

Though this probably just because I closed it before it saved!
  • Hi Dylan,

Nope, I haven't heard from anyone about my problem. I've stopped using Zotero for now until the problem is fixed because it's very frustrating to sit there and wait forever.
  • I find that the error occurs for specific web pages. Is that your experience too?
If we can find easily reproducible examples, I think we have a better chance of being heard.

For example, I cannot save this page.
    http://www.designer-notes.com/?p=195

Ahchong and Dylan, can you save this page? And can you share some URLs that do not work for you either?

    *** Theory ***
I was wondering if the problem occurs specifically on web pages that have unsafe JavaScript operations. Both of my examples here have this issue. (Turn on the Tools>JavaScript console before opening the page.)

Unsafe JavaScript attempt to access frame with URL http://www.raphkoster.com/gaming/moore.shtml from frame with URL http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?client=ca-pub-3965594639886679&format=125x125_as_rimg&output=html&h=125&w=125&lmt=1347300109&flash=11.3.31&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.raphkoster.com%2Fgaming%2Fmoore.shtml&dt=1347285709438&bpp=5&shv=r20120829&jsv=r20110914&correlator=1347285709478&frm=20&adk=3570521124&ga_vid=566646594.1347285710&ga_sid=1347285710&ga_hid=704109262&ga_fc=0&u_tz=-240&u_his=2&u_java=1&u_h=1200&u_w=1920&u_ah=1160&u_aw=1920&u_cd=32&u_nplug=16&u_nmime=59&dff=lucida%20grande&dfs=16&adx=985&ady=1030&biw=1124&bih=179&oid=3&fu=0&ifi=1&dtd=119&xpc=kPw0rGYMyY&p=http%3A//www.raphkoster.com. • Hi JJesper,

I just tried the two pages you suggested, and I can't save them either. It's been ten minutes and nothing has happened.

    Here's one of mine that I can't save: http://www.arabamericannews.com/news/index.php?mod=article&cat=USA&article=5725

And you are right, I get a similar message about:

Unsafe JavaScript attempt to access frame with URL http://www.arabamericannews.com/news/index.php?mod=article&cat=USA&article=5725 from frame with URL http://static.ak.facebook.com/connect/xd_arbiter.php?version=11#channel=f25708401c&origin=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.arabamericannews.com&channel_path=%2Fnews%2Findex.php%3Fmod%3Darticle%26cat%3DUSA%26article%3D5725%26fb_xd_fragment%23xd_sig%3Df3d875226%26. So what does that mean? Is Zotero going to look into the problem?

I have reached my Zotero File Storage quota and was considering purchasing storage but I'm pretty disappointed that no one from Zotero has responded to this issue since you first posted it three months ago, and it doesn't look like there's much support provided -- I can't even find an email address to reach somebody. I have basically stopped using Zotero now.
  • http://www.arabamericannews.com/news/index.php?mod=article&cat=USA&article=5725 does not work for me either.

I think the issue is that I mistyped my Zotero version when I opened the thread, which made the developers skeptical that my report was quite to be trusted...
  • but I'm pretty disappointed that no one from Zotero has responded to this issue since you first posted it three months ago, and it doesn't look like there's much support provide
that's silly. Look around - there are plenty of threads with lots of support from developers.
The (third party) webpagedump code that Zotero uses for snapshots fails on some sites - developers are aware of that but I doubt it's super high-priority and there's not much point in them posting unless there's something new to say.
  • I looked through the forum and did various searches and this was pretty much the only thread I could find that addressed the issue. I don't know how I was supposed to know that developers were aware of the problem if they don't at least respond.
  • see e.g. here:
    http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/21149/snapshot-handling-documentation/
[Dan Stillman:]That said, WPD is old and unmaintained, and we need a replacement.
  • Both of these work for me with Chrome and Zotero 3.0.11.1. JJesper/ahchong, are you still having trouble with those pages in 3.0.11.1?
  • @Dan Yes, the problem appears to have gone away now - those pages save just fine. (Also hadn't experienced the problem in a while.)

Thanks a lot for your time, I appreciate it.

    -Jesper Juul
  • Hi Dan, it works for me now too with the new update. Thanks for addressing the issue, much appreciated.
