Libre office and zotero

I have Libre Office 3.5.6. I have installed the zotero plug in. It worked for a month, but now, when I try to insert citation, it says "Zotero experienced an error updating your document. Syntax Error: Illegal XML character.'

Could anyone help with this? Thanks very much.

    Try a different citation style for a start (change in "Set Document Preferences").

    Unfortunately, it doesn't even allow me to do that. If I click on any of the zotero icons, the error message pops up.

    that's no good - try running through these then:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting#debugging_broken_documents
    good chance that just copying the document will do the trick.
