import short journal titles

When I import references from PubMed, I get inconsistent abbreviated title fields. Sometimes the abbreviatiojn is completely correct, sometimes it is correct, but missing periods, and sometimes I get no short title at all.

Can someone explain how this works and a workaround so that I have both in my references?

    no - we rely on the data from PubMed - if that's inconsistent (and there is a good chance it is) there is not much we can do.

    Medium term this will be solved in a more generic way so that you can use abbreviation lists - see here

    This is a bit technical, but the PubMed XML does contain the journal ISSN, which can be used to match and consolidate title variants of the same journal.
