google scholar cites document

Hi - I want to create a document or spreadsheet with all the (~450) papers that cite a particular paper, according to google scholar. Someone told me i could do this with zotero with just a few clicks. I'm new to zotero and looked around the documentation some but couldn't figure out how to do this - can anyone help? Any advice highly appreciated! thanks!!
  • I assume you have Zotero installed?
Then first have a look at this:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/getting_stuff_into_your_library#web_translators
Are you seeing the folder icon for your google scholar search results?

If so, you're almost there. To speed things up, you can change the google scholar settings to show you more than the default 10 hits per page (it's under settings on the top right).

Then, click on the "cited by..." link of the item in question in google scholar and just import all item.

You can then select all those items, right-click, select "Create bibliography from selected items", select your citation style and the output format (maybe in this case creating an RTF file is best). Zotero will probably freeze for a couple of seconds while creating a large bibliography - and then you're done.

Note, though, that the bibliographic data provided by and imported from google scholar isn't always flawless and Zotero's citations are only as good as the data.
  • Thanks very much. Can't try this right now but should be able to later today
  • (oh - and there is a small chance that google scholar will temporarily lock you out - they have anti-bot protection. You should be able to identify yourself as human by filling out a captcha.)
  • Ok, sorry to say this isn't working for me, at least not yet. No folder (or any) icon when I just do a google scholar search. When I click on the article name, and go to first (JSTOR) link, I get an icon, but not folder (icon looks more like a document/paper). I've tried clicking on that/adding item, but that doesn't seem to help much, as when I click on 'cited by', I don't know what to do next (don't know how to import all items, I guess - you say select all items, but not sure how to do this - assume not just highlighting, but tried that, right-clicking etc, and didn't work anyway)

Any other advice you could provide would be great. Thanks again so much for your help - Dan
  • Could you provide us with:

    1) A link to the Google Scholar search that does not give you a Zotero icon in the URL bar
    2) Your Zotero version (Gear icon -> About Zotero)

and also make sure that your translators are up to date by following item 5 over here: http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues

The problem is right at the start - you should see a folder icon after a google scholar search.
    Go here:
    http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=test
do you not see a folder icon in the URL bar - see the screenshot in my link above?
If not, what's the URL you're seeing in your browser?
What's the exact set-up you're using (which browser, Zotero version, OS)?

If it is, what't the URL of a google scholar search where you're not seeing the icon?

(edit - also do what Aurimas' says above).
  • Got it! Got the folder for the test link after updating to latest version (following Aurimas advice).
    Thanks!!!
(Now I do have another question - is there a particularly good way to get the references into a spreadsheet/excel? Feel free to ignore this as this is something I can deal with on my own, really - but any advice again appreciated.. Thanks again)
  • great, thanks!! (will try this later today..)
