Item no longer exists in your Zotero database

Hi - I have read the earlier posts re this issue and am still struggling..I am at the end of a fairly long paper and went to insert a new citation and received the error "item no longer exists in your Zotero database" regarding earlier references (the first 1&2). I can see the relevant reference in the list on Zotero and have even put in a new entries and tried selecting Yes to the substitute option - to no avail. It was all working beautifully last week, since then Firefox has updated to 14.01 and I have done some work on the paper at another computer (the paper is stored on a communal Dropbox file). I have done the latter before without issue and it appeared when I that the references were saving to the word document (when I finally found the preferences box). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Karen
  • "and tried selecting Yes to the substitute option"
could you clarify exactly what you did there?
Zotero will throw that message as long as there are items it does not recognize. Did you substitute all items it prompted you to?

Also, how do you sync the Zotero libraries between the two computers?
  • Re: "and tried selecting Yes to the substitute option"
When the dialogue box asked if I would like to substitute for another item, I tried:
1.selecting the original item again (I could see it in Zotero)
2.entering another reference for the same item into Zotero and the selected that
Then it just went back in forth asking me to enter substitutes for these two items 1&2.

Re how I synch the Zotero between the two computers - good question, I am now worried that I haven't been doing this correctly...or at all.... One option I have wondered about is going into the office tomorrow and seeing if I can enter the required reference from there...
  • Would you mind emailing the document to support@zotero.org?
  • "Re how I synch the Zotero between the two computers - good question, I am now worried that I haven't been doing this correctly...or at all...."

that might be the problem, so if this works from the other machine, you probably just need to make sure Zotero is synced on both computers. If it doesn't, send it to zotero support as Simon requests above.
  • Hi - sent my document in to support. Just wondering how it is going ...or if I am going to have to enter my references from scratch? Cheers
  • I looked at the document, and it looked like some of the reference data should have been embedded but wasn't. I've fixed that for the next Zotero release. However, the references should still work if you locate them in Zotero, and when I tried that, everything seemed to work. Are you sure that Zotero isn't highlighting different citations after you correct the first two? If that is really the case, I'd try deleting just those citations and see if the document works after that (or step 8 of debugging broken documents).
