pdf is not being attached after I installed Zotero 3.0

Hello,

I have never had problems with the automatic pdf attachments of zotero. But now, after installing Zotero 3.0 the pdfs are not being attached automatically. I usually use references from IEEXplore and I already check the option in zotero "Automatically attach associated PDFs and..."

Hope I can have a soon answer about this issue,

Kind regards,

  • Provide an example URL.
  • Works for me. This is with Zotero for Firefox?
  • Yes, it is with firefox. Furthermore, there is another friend of mine who has the same problem.
  • Zotero 3.0.3 and Firefox 10.0.2

when you hover over the icon in the URL bar (the one you click to import)- does it say IEEEXplore or something else?
  • "save to Zotero (DOI)"
  • OK, that's the problem then - it doesn't recognize the site as IEEE XPlore - is the URL you provide above the one you see in the URL bar? If not, what exactly do you see (including your institutional proxy if any).
  • This is what I see in the URL bar:
    http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/search/srchabstract.jsp?tp=&arnumber=6024477&searchWithin%3DAuthors%3A.QT.Xiaohong+Guan.QT.%26refinements%3D4294967131%26openedRefinements%3D*%26sortType%3Ddesc_Publication+Year%26filter%3DAND%28NOT%284283010803%29%29%26searchField%3DSearch+All

The estrange thing for me is that I never have had this problem before and I have been with Zotero a pair of years already. And IEEE XPlore is the database I use the most.
  • That's really odd, that URL should work,
nothing changed on the Zotero side on this. Out of curiosity, try this one:
    http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpls/abs_all.jsp?arnumber=6024477&tag=1

Make sure you have updated your translator from the general tab of the Zotero preferences.

Also, see if you can create an error report ID right after loading that page (make sure it has finished loading and you see the icon in the URL bar, then send the error report).
    http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs#provide_a_report_id
  • Also, to narrow done what could be causing this - does the site show you that you're signed in? Do you have a "brought to you" box on the right?
  • Curiously, it seems that problem is just with IEEE, I am having no problem with Elsevier. e.g.
    http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1364032109000240
  • Brought to you by
    UNIVERSIDAD PONTIFICIA DE COMILLAS
I can open the pdf and everything as usual. What I cannot do is to save it in Zotero automatically.
A friend of mine is having the same problem in another university (in another country)
  • Curiously, it seems that problem is just with IEEE, I am having no problem with Elsevier. e.g.
that's what we'd expect. This is not a problem with Zotero's attach pdf functionality. The problem is that the IEEE translator doesn't recognize you're on the IEEE page - the only reason you're able to import at all is that Zotero picks up the DOI that's displayed on the page and looks it up on CrossRef. I'm still not sure why that's the case though, hence the additional questions above.
  • The translator of my Zotero is also up to date.
Here is the information I have about the proxy of my institution:
    130.206.68.151
    proxy.upcomillas.es
  • Report ID: 185748374
  • edited March 8, 2012
but to be clear - the URL that you posted above is exactly what you see in the URL bar, correct? You don't see any proxy.upcomillas.es ?
Have you tried the URL I suggested?

    edit: thanks for Error ID.
  • Dan - is there anything translator related in the Error ID? The IEEE translator uses only the URL for detect, so I'm quite puzzled it doesn't fire for gmorales.
  • I asked someone here for the proxy and that was what I sent. I don't see any proxy in the URL bar.
I tried your link and that did not work neither.
  • OK - let's see if Dan or Simon have any input from the error ID.
  • [JavaScript Error: "Zotero is undefined" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/preferences/preferences.js" line: 84}]"
That may not be related, but it shouldn't happen either. Try disabling your other Firefox extensions, and if you're still seeing "(DOI)" provide a Debug ID for loading of the page.
  • I Disabled all the extensions but Zotero and still the same problem.
    The Debug ID is D1652843748.

(4)(+0000002): Translate: Binding sandbox to http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpls/abs_all.jsp?arnumber=1525103

Move your Zotero data directory out of Dropbox and reset your translators from the Advanced pane of the Zotero preferences. Storing your entire data directory in Dropbox has the potential to seriously corrupt your database and related files, and we can't help you as long as it's in there.

Be sure to temporarily disable auto-syncing before changing your data directory setting so that Zotero doesn't try to sync to the empty directory.
  • I followed your instructions and I still have the same problem.
The new Debug ID is D2140133886
  • I've just pushed a new version of the IEEE Xplore translator that should fix this. Your copy of Zotero should auto-update within 24 hours, or you can update manually by clicking Update Now in the General pane of the Zotero prefs.
  • thanks - just spotted the problem, too. That was my bad, I'm sorry.
  • Thank you very much, it is working perfectly now.

I run into this problem today. When visiting this page and trying to save an item, the pdf does not save with the item:

    http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/mostRecentIssue.jsp?punumber=6122900

    The Debug ID is D459579527

And it does not seem to be an issue with Standalone/Chrome connector or proxy. I tried this both on campus and off-campus, with standalone and without standalone, even tried GMU's proxy, neither works.

On the other hand, if I save an item from the individual item page:

    http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/lpdocs/epic03/wrapper.htm?arnumber=6123267

the pdf was saved OK, although the browser popped up prompting me to save it again to the hard drive.
  • @zxie - this is now fixed.
You can wait 24hs for the translator to auto-update or you can update immediately from the general tab of the Zotero preferences.
  • Not seem to be fixed when I just tried. I did updated the translator and confirmed by checking the translator code.

    New debug id is D1944184869.

I tried multiple times. One time it saved less than 18 pdfs out of 65 total items. Most of times it did not save any pdf.
