Cannot sync Zotero stand alone

After what I think was an update I cannot sync.
I always get the error message that the directory in which Zotero is trying to write is read-only. I used Windows 7 SP3.

    Restarting your computer or disabling security software may also help.

    Yes, I tried both. Stopping the anti-virus and adding Zotero as an exception to the Windows firewall helped.
    But going back to windows before the August 7 update and re-installing Zotero 3 stand-alone apparently solved it.
