Is there a quick and simple way to add an existing stand alone note to another parent item?

Hi there,

I have a large Zotero library, and often times I end up writing stand alone notes (not attached to any particular existing item in my library). When I want to attach it as a child item to another existing parent item, it takes a long time to select the note (in the "My Library Folder" ) and then drag it through my Zotero library until I find my required parent item and drop it on top. Is there an easier way to do this?

I have tried to first search for the parent item I want in the advanced search window, and then drag-n-drop an exiting standalone note to the from the "My library" folder to the parent item in the advanced search window. But that did not work.

Could the developers perhaps allow this functionality? Or perhaps add the feature "add as child item ... " in the right-click menu which could pull up a dialog box showing the whole Zotero library and then you could filter the results accordingly and then choose the parent item? Or perhaps the developers could enable splitting the middle pane in Zotero to allow for the items of two folders to be displayed at once?

I guess my post is both a comment and a request. Please forgive me :)

Thanks.
Belal
  • In absence of a more elegant solution (afaik), I have created a temporary collection, and I drag both items into it. Now I can easily drag the note to the item from within that collection.
  • I've used an probably even less elegant solution: I edit the note so it has the title or author of the article as its first line, and then filter in the search field, so that I have a manageably short list to drag and drop within.
  • Wow, I like that better. Thanks!
