word 2011 mac - not working

I submitted error report 361930044.

Can't get zotero to work with word. Any thoughts?

    Sorry, I thought all the information was in the error report.

    I've installed latest version of Zotero. Cannot use zotero with any word document (new or pre-existing).

    The toolbar does absolutely nothing, have reinstalled the Word plugin multiple times.

    Trying commands from the Script menu commands occasionally give me this error message:

    [Exception… “The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error −1708.) @[setProperty:document.m:1147]’ when calling method: [zoteroIntegrationDocument::setDocumentData]” nsresult: “0x8057001e (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_STRING)” location: “JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/integration.js :: <TOP_LEVEL> :: line 893” data: no]

    Commands from the Script menu, when they don't give me the above error message just open Zotero standalone and subsequently do nothing.
  • thank you for responding, but neither of the things suggested in that link solve the problem (I had tried them already, in fact). VB for Applications is definitely installed, and i've tried deleting the OLE registration database a few times. it is not a custom install of Office, and I reinstalled it just to make sure.

    no such luck.

    the problem does seem to follow this pattern:
    1. try zotero in word, get error message as stated earlier in this thread
    2. reinstall the word plugin / delete OLE registration database / restart word
    3. try zotero in word, now all it does is switch me to the standalone Zotero application, and nothing else happens.
    4. if i quit word, and reopen it - then i get the error message again, and the cycle repeats.

    * When I say "try zotero in word", this is always through the Scripts menu. The Zotero toolbar always appears, but never does anything, in any stage of the above process.

    thanks!

    First, if you haven't already, make sure you have the latest release of Office 2011. Also, if you have accented characters in the path to the Word application (e.g., in your hard drive name), try removing those.

    If neither of these steps fix things, open a new document in Word, and then open /Applications/Utilites/AppleScript Editor and paste the following into the box:
    tell application "Microsoft Word" to make new custom document property at active document with properties {name:"Test", value:"Test"}
    Click "Run."

    If you get an error, then AppleScript support in Word is broken for some reason. We've heard of this happening before, but we haven't been able to track down the cause. If you don't get an error, and the property shows up in Word under File->Properties->Custom, then the fault probably lies elsewhere.
  • Hello, thanks for the help.

    latest release of Office 2011: check
    no accented characters in path to Word: check

    AppleScript support: appears to be broken based on the test you provided. This is the error message I got from AppleScript:

    "error "Microsoft Word got an error: Can’t make class custom document property." number -2710 from custom document property to class"

    Do you have any suggestions?
  • Unfortunately, not really. It sounds like you've already tried reinstalling Word, so maybe try moving your entire Office 2011 preferences folder to the desktop and see if that makes a difference. We've heard of this happening once before, but I'm not aware of a resolution.
  • Hi -- I just wanted to thank you for that suggestion. I was having the same problem, moved Office 2011 to the desktop, and lo and behold Zotero works again.
  • I got this error and realized it was because I was impatient. It takes a while for the script to scan the document, and the feedback is subtle (in the status bar). It was working away but I thought it had failed; 'undo' etc. then triggers the error message.
