Serial's import

I regularly work with zotero using the software Koha (library management software). I am surprised to see that the import of periodicals (called zotero 'document', not a dedicated document type in the term 'periodic' for example. They have add a type of document required for this type of document? or has anyone ever changed the code in koha to get to export these records for periodicals?

Thank you in advance for your help!
  • I don't fully understand. Do you mean that the entire issue of a journal is added to zotero as "document"?
Can you provide a URL (web address)?
  • I mean that the entire issue of a journal or a journal is added to zotero as "document" .

The URL indicated in document types is for "journal" is a book
For exemple in the SUDOC (in France) : the reference is a journal but they have in the URL (http://www.sudoc.abes.fr/DB=2.1/SET=2/TTL=1/SHW?FRST=1) a book. So you can not have a specific items for the journal (or periodical)as this https://catalogue.univ-lyon3.fr/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=17754 (an white items) .

  • @adamsmith or @aurimas: Can you have a look on the second link provided by the OP (https://catalogue.univ-lyon3.fr/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=17754)?
The translator (which relies on COinS) does not seem to work for periodical (added as journal article).

It's the same issue with this koha opac: https://ahuntsic.koha.ccsr.qc.ca/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=145770
The periodical is added through unAPI but the import does not work if COinS is selected (right-click on the document icon)

Maybe a dedicated koha translator would solve these issues.
  • I think we should look into a KOHA translator - should be very easy given that they export in any format that the heart desires (I'd probably go with MarcXML, but MODS would work, too.)

The problem with the status quo is that COinS doesn't have an item type for serial, so it treats it as a journal article - but then doesn't get a title (only a publication title) which leads it to fail silently.
  • Great. Thanks.

@ adamsmith Thank you for that, I asked this question because we are trying at my institution where I work to supplement the data from our records. The import of periodicals don't work at all with us (zotero not recording), and for the catalog of Lyon 3.
At Sudoc, periodicals are recognized by Zotero works as default. I wish to know if such "journal article" or "newspaper" in Zotero can be the equivalent of "periodic". Or if there are ongoing developments in the software to offer other types of document? Or is he has to make changes in koha?
    Thank you for your help.
  • 1-What's your library catalogue (url?)

2-Sudoc saves entire runs of periodical in zotero as "books" which is not really wrong ("journal article" is not a better choice at the moment I think).

3-In the future, a new item type "periodical" will probably be added. As far as I understand, this new type will be used for complete runs of periodical. Single issue will still be saved as "journal article".
For more information, see this discussion.

4-As adamsmith wrote above, Koha needs to be improved and this might be done soon.
  • There's a Koha translator now so this should work better.
