"Zotero could not load the component required..." with Word for Windows

Hi

I am having trouble with the the Word Plug-in. The Zotero icons are installed as an add in within the Word toolbar but I can't find it in my browser add-on extensions; and when I try to use the citation tool I get the following message:-

“Zotero could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor. Please ensure the appropriate extension is installed and try again.”

I am using Zotero for Firefox 3.0.7 and MS Word 14.0.6112.5000(32-bit)

Thanks

Mike
  • If you can't find Zotero and/or Zotero Word for Windows Integration in your browser extensions, that would explain why you're getting this error. You can download Zotero for Firefox here and the Word for Windows plugin here.
  • Hi Simon,

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

However Zotero is installed in Firefoalso x as is the Zotero Scholar citations 1.5. The custom toolbar is installed in Word 2010.

When I click on the install Word for Windows Plugin 3.1.7 (Firefox extension) nothing happens and there is nothing corresponding to that in my Firefox add-ons extensions file. And I still keep getting the message as above:“Zotero could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor. Please ensure the appropriate extension is installed and try again.”

I am a bit foxed. I can do everything with Zotero except actually use it in a document.

The wier thing is it did once, but only once, show me the pop up citation menu but I can't remember what I did right.

    Many Thanks

    Mike
  • When you click the link to install the Word for Windows plugin, you should see a popup notification that says "Firefox prevented this site (www.zotero.org) from asking you to install software on your computer" with an "Allow" button. Are you saying you don't see this?
  • also try disabling scholar citations - it's a third party plugin that's not been maintained a lot, there is a small chance that it's interfering.
  • Hi

    Thanbks everyone.

I have changed the pop-up blocker to allow from Zotero and disabled Scholar citations, but still no joy, I'm afraid.

Same old message and no sign of the extension in Firefox...

    Thanks again,

    Mike
  • Nothing to do with a popup blocker — it's just a message from Firefox when you install an extension from a third-party site.
  • I have the same problem as the OP, but it only happens with Firefox, not with Zotero Standalone.

When running Firefox (with Zotero 3.0.7 running properly as a browser extension), I get the error message when I try to insert a new citation or edit an existing citation in my Word document.
    > Zotero could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor. Please ensure the appropriate extension is installed and try again.

However, when running Zotero Standalone instead of Firefox, I do not have this problem, and am able to insert or edit citations.

I have tested this problem with multiple existing documents and with a new document, and the problem is consistent.

This problem only happens on my office computer; with my laptop Zotero functions correctly whether running in Firefox or as Standalone. I haven't seen any configuration differences between the computers.

You need to install the Word for Windows plugin (Firefox extension) if you want to use the Word plugin with Zotero for Firefox.
  • done. sorry I'd missed that one. I'd correctly installed that on my laptop, and had forgotten about that extra plugin when I set up Zotero on my office computer.
thanks for the help and sorry to bother.
  • Hi

Thanks: you are right, it does work for me with Standalone.

However I still can't seem to install the Word for Windows plug in, even though the Zotero icons are in my Word toolbar. Can that be right?

    Thanks again,

    Mike
  • What do you mean by "can't seem to install"? Please describe the problems you have during installation.

(and yes, if you have Standalone, the icons would be there eve with the word plugin not installed for Zotero-Firefox).
  • Hi

as I said above (if you trace this thread back): When I click on the install Word for Windows Plugin 3.1.7 (Firefox extension) nothing happens and there is nothing corresponding to that in my Firefox add-ons extensions file. And I still keep getting the message as above:“Zotero could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor. Please ensure the appropriate extension is installed and try again.”

    Thanks

I had the same thing; as adamsmith notes the Zotero icons showed up in Word because Standalone was installed on my computer; however, clicking the icons would only work when Standalone was running.

<edit> sorry Mike, I forgot that you'd tried to install Word for Windows plugin.
  • sorry Mike - forgot that from up-thread:
Try this -- Right click on this link:
    http://download.zotero.org/integration/Zotero-WinWord-Plugin-3.1.7.xpi
save as... and save it somewhere on your disk. Then open that file from within Firefox (by dragging it to FF or by using Open File).
  • HI

I get this message "Zotero Word for Windows Integration could not be installed because is not compatible with Firefox15.0"

What should I do to fix the problem?
  • rudenci, your issue does not seem to be related to the others discussed in this thread at all, but you're getting it because you're running the beta version of Firefox. You can either install Firefox 14, which is the latest released version, or you can wait until we update Zotero Word for Windows integration for Firefox 15, which will happen in the next week.
