MHRA - Use of single quotation marks

I am a relatively new user of Zotero and although I managed to find answers to most of my questions without creating a new discussion topic, I could not figure out a couple of things. One of these is the use of single quotation marks.

I am using Zotero Stand Alone and MHRA style. In the MHRA, everything should be given in single quotation marks. All the single quotation marks I enter are turned into double quotation marks, be they in the title of a book, or in an extended explanation for a footnote. Is there a way to prevent this? I'd appreciate your help.

Thank you.
  • Could you give a specific example? Zotero will flip quotation marks - e.g. if you have a title in (single) quotation marks and have something in single quotation marks in that title, Zotero will turn the inner quotation marks to double. That's correct for MHRA.
It sounds like that's not what's happening for you, though, so it's possible that Zotero is overzealous.
  • For example, I have the following book:

Achilles in Rome: The Latin 'Iliad' of Baebius Italicus

The title of the book turns into italics as it's supposed to be. However, since Iliad is the title of another book, it needs to be in single quotation marks according to the MHRA style guide. But Zotero turns these into double quotation marks, no matter they are in single or double quotation marks in your original entry.
  • Likewise anything you add in single quotation marks (like a quote from that book) in the prefix or suffix boxes when you are adding a citation, are turned into double quotation marks.
  • OK, thanks - Frank would have to take a look.
  • Thank you. If it's something that can be fixed that would be great.
  • actually - it's a problem with the style, not with Zotero so no need for Frank. We should be able to fix that in the next 2-3 days.
  • this is done now. Update the style by re-installing it from the repository and it should work correctly.
  • Thanks very much. It does work!
