proxy redirecting some webpages to a facebook "like" page

Some of firefox webpages seem to be getting redirected by the proxy for the zotero plugin.

The problem does not happen when I disable zotero, that is one way I know that Zotero is involved.

Everytime the problem occurs, it produces a webpage with an address that starts with this string: "http://www.facebook.com.gate.lib.buffalo.edu/plugins/like"

I do not use facebook although I have logged on once or twice a long time ago. So this is a bit of a mystery to me.

The "lib.buffalo.edu" part is no mystery -- that's where the correct primary proxy is supposed to be directing things.

I have tried installing Adblock plus and creating a custom filter to block any "facebook.com" pages, but this is not working. Also cleared all history and cookies as well.

Any ideas about how to fix this? It does not happen with all sites, mostly less-than-academic ones. And when the page with this address appears, it invariably is blank except for the facebook "like" logo/option and facebook "sign in" at the top.

Do you think I have some malware?

Thanks for your suggestions!
Jennifer
  • Update --
here is what worked (at least for now), although I am not sure why it worked.

I deleted all the proxies in Zotero's preferences, including the last remaining one (I had earlier deleted another I had suspected).
I then went and searched a new article and had zotero re-grab the UB library proxy (i.e. at my university).

It looked the same as the last one I deleted.
However, the problem -- at least for now -- seems to be solved.

    Odd.
    Keep your fingers crossed!
Thoughts about this problem (in case it should recur, or how to prevent it) still most welcome. -jlg
  • Thanks, Dan.
I had seen that troubleshooting advice.
The thing is, I was not accessing any proxied sites when this problem was happening.
More like just regular webpages getting "hijacked" -- although I am not sure that is the right term.

I understand. That page still applies.
  • This same issue has happened repeatedly (about once per day for the last few days). Even when I delete the facebook.com proxy from the list, it comes back. Anyone have this same problem and dealt with it?
