Double entries after synch

I have just synchronised my library and that caused some double entries which I already deleted online and offline. Now I have the problem to refresh my document. I have two citations though one of them was deleted.

For example: Blakely & Snyder 1997a and Blakely & Snyder 1997 b

In the library there is only one document.

Whats the problem?

    Because of the way it works, syncing can't produce duplicates. The only way to get duplicates is to export and import a library (via RDF, RIS, etc.)—if you export a library and import it onto another computer and sync the two, you'll have what appear to be duplicates, because the export/import process creates entirely separate items.

    I don't really understand your question about your document, though.

    Ok I will try to explain it. I have cited Blakely & Snyder 1997 some days ago before I caused the trouble with the duplicates and before I used the online account of zotero. After that I deleted the double entries. When I now press the edit button I can choose between "cited" and "in my library". There I see two different entries of the same source I would like to cite. The old one which I deleted in my library(but cited some days before) and the new one. So I have Blakely & Snyder 1997a and Blakely & Snyder 1997b though in my library is only one source.

    Ah, OK. Zotero 3.0 stores references in the document by default, so you'll need to reselect the versions from your library.

    Also note that, if you use Zotero's built-in duplicate detection feature to merge items, this doesn't happen.

    What do you mean by "reselect the versions"? Can I connect the "old" citation with the "new" source, so zotero will realize that there is only one source?

    Edit the citation and choose the one in your library instead of the cited one.

    Ok and at this point there is the problem I described.

    1. Click on edit
    2. Two possibilities to choose: a) originally cited b) the one in my library (actual entry)
    3. When I choose a) I will get Blakely & Snyder 1997a and when I choose b) I will get Blakely & Snyder 1997b

    Maybe the only possibility is to remove the zotero codes. I´ve tried and after that the old citation is gone and I can only chosse the new one.

    Most likely you just didn't change all of them. If there's still a citation pointing to the stored version of the old one, you'd get the disambiguation behavior you describe. If you're sure you've changed all of them, let us know.

    Also, make sure you have Zotero 3.0.7, in case this is due to a bug in the citation processor that's since been fixed.

    Dear Dan,

    I am using the actual version of zotero. Neither in my local nor in my online library I can find double entries. I can solve the problem by removing the zotero codes. After that only the actual entry of the source appears. Perhaps it is relevant that I worked with 2 PCs, when I started the document? Entries in subfolders are no double entries? Only the main library matters?

    No, you're misunderstanding. Zotero stores cited references in the document in addition to the Zotero library. Even if you deleted an item from Zotero, the cited version in the document still counts as a separate copy, and so disambiguation will apply if there's another citation that points to the remaining version from the library. You need to change all citations to point to the version in the library (and not in the "Cited" section).

    OK but when I choose the actual item from zotero I´ve got still the problem with source a) and b). For example Blakely & Snyder 1997a is the old "cited" one and Blakely & Snyder 1997b is the actual one in the library. I do not understand why zotero cites Blakely & Snyder 1997 without a) and b). Like I´ve said I can solve this problem by removing the codes and adding the citations in a new document. If remove the codes just for a part of the document and reintegrate it the same problem appears when I press the refresh button. I think the easiest way will be to copy the documen, remove the codes and add the citations from zotero. Selfmade problem by importing libraries several times. THX for your help.

    Found a solution to this on another forum. You can remove the field code in windows/linux by selecting the reference and using ctrl+shift+F9 (cmd+shift+F9 on mac). Do this for all instances of "1997a" and "1997b" Then re-add those references manually from one source (i.e. "cited"). This will save you from having to copy to a new document and removing all field codes.
