change the categories

Hi.

I'm a new German user of zotero.

So, I have some questions:

1: How I add a new category / item type or change for e.g. "book" into photography?
2: Is zotero going well complete without internet-connection or Firefox?
3: Is it possible to search text in pictures (OCR) like PDF?

Sorry for my English...

Best regards

  • 1. you can't add new item types. You can change between existing item types in the right-hand panel.
    2. yes
    3. no
  • Hi

I know that I can an existing item type change into an other.
Is there also no possibility to change it on a language file? Where are the language-files (en, de, ...)?

    Thank you for help!

Not sure what you mean here.
  • Sorry...

In a file, you have the translations for German-Language.
There you have for e.g. the parameter "book" which is in German "Buch".
Now, I want to change "Buch" into "Foto", because I don't need the item type "Buch".
    Where is this translation file?

Changing the label of the item type wouldn't change any of the fields, so that's not really a solution. Zotero doesn't support custom item types and fields. Your best bet is to figure out how to work within the current data model.
  • That's not really a solution, unfortunately...

I'm not sure what you expect. We're just telling you what's possible.
  • I know, sorry!

    Thank you anyway!

If you provide some more details on what exactly you're trying to accomplish (and, for example, why "Artwork" isn't satisfactory), someone might have some ideas for you.
  • I have circa 1500 Newspaper-Scans, 500 Photos, 150 old advertisements, etc.
My meaning is, a photography or an advertisement isn't a "Artwork"...

So, I don't need a Item Type like "Book" but I need a Type "Pictures / Photos"...

I can understand but Zotero is mainly a reference management software. Thus, as ajlyon has explained in this thread:
it is important to remember that item types in Zotero are best understood as a set of fields and a set of ways they tend to be styled. That means that the best argument for new fields or types is that a certain type of data or citation is presently impossible to represent in Zotero.
You can use tags/collections in order to sort items.
  • Hi again...

    I have the solution:

In the directory C:\Program Files\Zotero Standalone\chrome is the file zotero.jar

    Open (with WinRAR) there: zotero.jar\locale\[language]\zotero\zotero.properties

Now, you can overwrite from line 219 the Item Type-names...

    I like this program... :D

That's really not a good solution. You'll need to apply the same changes every time there's a new version, and you're still stuck with the book fields, which aren't relevant. If you do anything with the data, those items will be treated as books. Just changing a label in the UI doesn't make any sense.

Read Gracile's post. That's the answer.
  • Of course you can do that. But your change would have to be reapplied each time you upgrade Zotero...
Why do you absolutely want to change that? This is almost purely aesthetic.
