Error with MS word 2007 plugin installation

I have had Zotero working perfectly up until last night. I had just finished a document with references and all was fine. This morning I had to write another paper, and I get a communication error with Firefox and Word. Click the button, I get the error that word cannot communicate with firefox..

I went into Firefox>Zotero>Preferences>reinstall for word. (Ensuring that word is exited, etc.) the result is the following message:

"Installation could not be completed because an error occurred. Please ensure that Microsoft Word is closed, and then restart Firefox."

Closed everything down, rebooted computer, tried again to sync (reinstall Zotero Plugin) result: same error.

I go to the folder location and deleted the Zotero.doc file out of the directory, tried to reinstall, result: same error.

I LOVE this product, but I am getting very frustrated at this point. This hasn't happened once, it has happened on both my laptop and desktop multiple times! I fixed it once in the past by deleting zotero.doc file per a discussion topic I read. I reinstalled plugin and it worked for about 1 week, then out of the blue it broke again. Now I am having the exact same issue on both my laptop and desktop.

So the real question is, how do I start from scratch?? There seems to be no way to uninstall this plugin anywhere in the "Uninstall Programs" option.

Please advise!

  • One final note, I downloaded the plugin for open office as well, it states that the plugin installed correctly but when I go into my paper to cite sources, nothing happens when I click the "cite" button.. Very frustrating!

  • fah924: It's unlikely that reinstalling the Word plugin will fix your issues. If your user account has privileges to delete Zotero.dot from the Word startup directory, but you can't install Zotero.dot from Firefox, it sounds like security software that applies special protections to Firefox may be interfering. You might try installing Zotero Standalone and seeing if it can install the Word plugin and if so, if the Word plugin functions properly there.
