How to install modified style?

Hi,
I have a few modified styles based on already existing styles. I have a new style for Invertebrates Systematics (http://www.publish.csiro.au/nid/123/aid/428.htm#6) based on "Frontiers journals" (http://www.zotero.org/styles/frontiers). But when I am going to install it via Firefox it asks me if I want to update "frontiers", but does not recognize it as a new, different style. How can I do that (keep base style and my new one)? I tried changing the title and deleting the ID but then it does not appear in the list of styles.

Thanks!

  • Thanks a lot! worked perfectly. I was confused because I thought that I needed first to share the style in order to put the address on the ID.

    thanks for the feedback. I've tried to clarify that in the instructions.
  • Hi,

    I am trying to upload a modified MLA style to include an annotated bibliography.
    I have created and validated the code
    ...
    that ends with

    <text macro="access" prefix=" "/>
    <text display="block" variable="note"/>
    </layout>
    </bibliography>
    </style>

    but cannot figure out how to save it as a .cls extension or install it.
    It will only allow me to save it as .txt* document.

    Do I need to save the code from the validation webpage or another webpage?

    Thanks
  • You can just save the CSL style with a *.txt extension and then change it by hand to a *.csl one.
  • for that you may have to show file extensions if you're using windows:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/865219
    alternatively, Zotero is now kind enough to also recognize .csl.txt as a "valid" file extension for style files.
  • so once I have it saved as a .txt file what do I do?
  • if possible change the file extension to .csl. If you absolutely can't figure out how to do that (though see the link to microsoft), rename the style so it's mla-annotated.csl.txt, i.e. include .csl in the filename.
  • Okay, I have it now as a csl.txt file and have dragged it into an open firebox window but there is no "install" window that pops up...
    What now?
    (thanks!)
  • what exactly does happen when you drag it to FF? And you're using Zotero for Firefox, right?
  • I am using a Zotero standalone with a google chrome extension.
    The same thing happens when I put it in Firefox of Google chrome:
    The webpage opens up with my code but nothing else..
  • right - you need to mention that you're using standalone - remember that most instructions you'll find here on the forum and some of the documentation predate its existence.

    I believe you should be able to install the file from the style manager in the Zotero preferences -->Cite-->styles: Click the + sign under the styles window and browse to your file.
  • wow that was easier then I thought..got it.
    Thanks a bunch!
  • Hi
    I'm looking for help in saving and installing a modified csl style: I have modified the Vancouver csl in text editor, it's working fine in the zotero test pane but I can't figure out how to open the text file in an open firefox window (I'm using zotero for firefox)
    Best wishes
    Kristian
  • Did you try "Save the style with a ”.csl” file extension, and drag-and-drop the CSL style file onto an open Firefox browser window, and click the “Install” button", as is described at http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step#install_your_edited_style_with_zotero?
  • Hi
    Yes I tried that but I'm not shure in what window I should save: is it the modified code in the text-edit (mac os), is it the zotero reference test pane or is it a third window. None of the two former gives me the opportunity to drag-and drop a CSL style file onto firefox.
  • You cannot directly save or install styles from the reference test pane. If you have made changes in the pane, selected all the code and copy and paste it into TextEdit. In TextEdit, save the code to a file with a ".csl" extension, and then drag that file from the OS X finder onto an open Firefox window.
  • Thank you very much for your help but I still can't make it work: In textedit i can't save the file with the extension ".csl". I can save the file only as rtf-format (.rdt), webpage (html), open document (.odt) or web archive. And I still can't figure out how to drag the file onto firefox. It might just be related to my poor computer skills in general..?
  • you need to use plain text mode in TextEdit (I believe Format-->Plain Text).
    You should be able to just save the file as .csl then (by simply typing .csl) - but if you can't, rename it from Finder once it's saved.

    If dragging to FF is puzzling to you, you can also install the file by going to the Cite tab in the Zotero preferences, to styles, click the + under the style box and then navigate to and select the csl style.
  • Hi Adam
    I have done as you said, but when I click the installation button in the cite tab nothing happens..
  • what do you mean by "the installation button"?
    If Zotero asks you whether to install the style and you click "Install" you are done.
    It the style doesn't show up in the list, you have probably forgotten to change the title and/or id of the style as described here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step#change_the_style_title_and_id
  • (I've created a ticket for adding the ability to install styles straight from csledit.xul. If someone wants to work on that, it's all yours.)
  • Hi again
    I have solved the problem now, it was due to wrong settings in my textedit and difficulties in saving the file in the right format. Thanks for the help
  • I'm having trouble installing my edited style; I've tried it using preferences from within zotero and by dragging the csl file into a firefox window, but I get an error message stating it does not appear to be a valid style file. I have pasted the code into the csl validator at http://simonster.github.com/csl-validator.js/
    and I get a successful validation.
    Any ideas?

    ty.subhawong: You're probably saving the file as something other than plain text (e.g., as RTF or a Word doc).
  • I saved it in mac's textedit program, and manually changed file type
    to .csl (and deleted the .rtf extension after right clicking and using
    "get info"). I've double checked to make sure firefox (12.0) and
    zotero (3.0.7) are both up to date. Any other ideas? Maybe I can send
    the style to someone to double check that it validates?
  • Put it up as a public gist on https://gist.github.com/ and post the link here.
  • URL: git://gist.github.com/2653949.git

    does this work?
  • The problem, as Dan guessed correctly, is that ty isn't using plain text mode in TextEdit (I think it's "Make Plain Text" under "Format")
