Word for Windows plugin version after update to 3.0.6

Hi, to those more knowledgeable than me...

I just updated from 3.0.3 to 3.0.6 and have a question.

I am currently running Zotero/FF and Zotero/Standalone with Word 2000:
Zotero 3.0.6 with FF 3.6 in XP-SP3 and,
Zotero 3.0.6 Standalone.

The citation feature seems to be working fine but there is one thing that is bothering me. When I check in FF for the Word for Windows add-on I get the following message:

Under Zotero FF:
The Zotero Word for Windows add-on is currently installed.

However, when I check in the Standalone version I get this message:

Under Zotero Standalone:
The Zotero Word for Windows add-on is NOT currently installed.

Should I click on [Install Word add-in]. Will this add 2 macro ribbons to Word.
Also is there a way to verify that version 3.1.6 of Word add-in is installed on the toolbar ribbon.
I found the zotero.dot but couldn’t make any determinations.

I’m about to start with some heavy writing and want to make sure things are stable (und alles in ordnung).

Thanks to all again.
  • Don't worry about it. Things are fine the way they are, and they won't change if you click the button. If the toolbar works at all, then you shouldn't worry about whether or not it's up to date.

If you're curious, the toolbar is a minimal stub to call code within Zotero, and by the time Zotero puts up a dialog or begins touching the document it's no longer involved. It probably says it's not installed in Standalone because it couldn't install on first startup (likely because Word was open at the time and the toolbar for Zotero for Firefox was already installed), but it doesn't matter because the toolbar it would install is the same as the toolbar for Zotero for Firefox. If you click the button, it will overwrite the toolbar with the same version.
  • Hi and thanks for the quick reply and thanks for the reassurance.
The citation feature seems to be playing well with Zotero.
You seem pretty knowledgeable... I'm wondering how does the Word plug-in know which version of Zotero to call on, meaning between Zotero FF and Zotero Standalone.
Before upgrading to 3.0.6 (from 3.0.3) I had a situation where the Word plug-in would work with the Standalone but not with the FF version.
    Thanks again.
  • (Simon is the senior developer in charge of word processor integration [among other things], and very knowledgeable indeed.)
  • The word plugin will generally work with all installed versions of Zotero, provided the word plugin is installed from that version of Zotero, too (e.g. I have my word plugin working for Standalone and Firefox).
If Stanadlone and ZFF share a data directory and both are open, the plugin "talks" to ZoteroSA. If they don't share a data directory I don't know - it's not recommended and might produce an error?
  • If Zotero for Firefox and Zotero Standalone are both open but don't share a data directory, the plugin still talks to Zotero Standalone.

If the plugin isn't working with Zotero for Firefox when Zotero Standalone is closed, it's possible that security software is interfering with it. (Some security software attempts to apply extra protection to Firefox, which can break word processor integration, sync, or other functionality. This is not a problem with Zotero Standalone.) It's also possible that another Firefox add-on could produce a conflict, although I think this is less likely.
  • Hi, Thanks again for the reply and insight. Things seem to be running smoothly but I will keep the Standalone version in my back pocket just in case.
    Thanks again.
    Best and Bless
