Syncing Impossible

Hello.
I've a Zotero account, browser plugins and Standalone.

Every time I try syncing, from browser or Standalone to Account, I'm asked to use my account credentials in Preferences to enable syncing.

Tried again and again without success. Apparently my credentials are not recognized by Zotero server; strangely the same credentials permit me to login to my account without problems.

I've tried practically everything "untecnical" and can't solve the issue leaving me without Zotero.

What can I do??? Please help asap.

    According to this you don't have a username entered into the Sync pane off the Zotero preferences under Zotero Sync Server.
  • Hi. I've just downloaded Zotero Standalone onto my new laptop and when I input my username and password to sync to my computer at uni a red exclamation mark appeared at the top right of the screen next to the sync button and said my id wasn't recognized (or words to that effect). I tried again to no avail. However, feeling adventurous, I clicked on the sync button anyway and what do you know?! Hey presto, there was my library in all its glory! What is this weird blip?

    I don't understand what you're saying here. What did you try again the first time, if not clicking the Sync button?
  • I tried re-entering the username and password as the red button was saying they weren't correct (or something of that nature). When I got the same error message again, I clicked on the sync button anyway even though the red button (with the exclamation mark) was there again and then it worked fine. Basically, when you try to sync to an existing account on a new computer for the first time, you get an error message which probably shouldn't come up. Just saying, to try to be helpful by notifying you about blips - I'm not a techie-bod so I can't shed any light on it myself.

    But Zotero doesn't sync again just because you entered your username and password. It sounds like you had it incorrectly entered, as the message said. When you corrected it and clicked sync, it worked. Sounds to me like it's working exactly as it should.

    If you can reproduce an actual problem, start a new thread and provide details there.
  • No. When I re-entered my user id and password I got the same error message I got the first time (red button with exclamation mark in top right corner)- but I decided to click on the sync button anyway, just in case. Anyway, not being funny, but I've got better things to do than report blips, so I'm off to do some work!

    Once again, Zotero doesn't try to sync again automatically when you reenter your credentials. If the sync error icon was already there from the earlier attempt, it would still be there. If you can reproduce a problem, start a new thread and provide exact steps to reproduce. If you're not willing to follow-up with steps to reproduce, there's no need to post to the forums (particularly in someone else's thread)—it's just a waste of everyone's time.

  • That wasn't a dig. I'm just explaining how this works. We love fixing problems, but we can't do so from descriptions that don't make sense if the posters aren't willing to follow up according to the bug-reporting instructions. If you don't have time for that, there's absolutely no need obligation to report problems here.
  • I only reported it because a message flashed up on screen telling me to send an error report by clicking on send (which I did) and then report it on the forum. As I said, I'm not a techie and have absolutely no idea how to recreate the problem on a forum - I don't even really understand forums as I never normally use them!
  • Hi I'm sorry but I think I'm facing a similar problem.
    I forgot my Zotero password and I reseted it today.
    I checked that my computer (Mac book Pro)also remembered the correct new password.
    But now, I can't sync to the server, there's an error message that tells me there's a problem with the username or password in the zotero preferences, but I double-checked both and there right...
    The error ID is : 980622653

  • Sophie: Clear both your username and password in the Sync pane of the preferences and retype them, and then try syncing again. If you're still having trouble, start a new thread.
