Saved papers not showing in Zotero on Mac

Hi all,

I am using version 3.0.3 of Zotero on Mac. Off late I am observing that when I save papers to Zotero on Firefox, it is not showing up on my Zotero Library. Can anyone help me out. I have a thesis to write and submit in approximately two weeks. It is a pain to save and load a paper everytime.
  • "Off late I am observing that when I save papers to Zotero on Firefox, it is not showing up on my Zotero Library."
could you explain what you mean by this? Which Zotero library? on zotero.org? Or on your computer in FF?
  • So when I save a reference on Firefox, using the option that is there in the address bar, it is not saving in the Zotero application. I am not able to insert a reference in the word document. I hope I cleared the doubt.
  • Usually when you import a reference, you see a grey box with the title - are you still seeing that?
  • where am I supposed to see the gray box? I see a box with the title on the bottom right hand side of the screen. But it is not saving in my library (neither online or on the application)
  • I click the page like icon on the address bar.. On the bottom right hand side of firefox, it says,'saving item and the name of the paper'. But I am not able to see it in my library
  • that seems highly unlikely. Try sorting your library by date added and see if the papers really aren't added.
If you're absolutely sure that's the case, create an error report ID after saving an item:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs
  • I am sure. I tried doing this three or four times. The last date on the library application is 19th March. Is there any way for me to save my library, delete zotero and reinstall. I tried doing that but everytime I install zotero and open it, it already has my old papers saved.
  • My error ID is 531402590
  • There are no Zotero errors in there.

I see five top-level items from the last 24 hours in your library on zotero.org. I suspect you're just looking in the wrong place.
  • I am not able to see any of the papers I am saving either on the Zotero library or the Zotero application. Can you suggest how I can solve the problem?
  • Ok. I am able to see it when I click the Zotero icon on the bottom right hand corner of Firefox. All the files I saved off late are here.

Why isnt the Mac application or my library online getting updated? How can I like the Zotero toolbar in Word to the one in Firefox.
  • Your Report ID indicates that you're using Zotero Standalone, but your posts above refer to Firefox. Are you using Zotero for Firefox in connector mode? That is, with Zotero Standalone open, such that clicking on Zotero in the add-on bar at the bottom brings Zotero Standalone to the front? Or are you using it in normal mode, where you see the Zotero pane in Firefox itself when you click on the Zotero icon?

OK, right. Did you say no when Zotero Standalone (or Zotero for Firefox—whichever you installed second) asked you whether to share a data directory? In any case, you can point them to the same Zotero data directory in the Advanced pane of the preferences.

(You should also see the new items if you just sync both with the server, but that shouldn't be necessary and isn't recommended on the same system—sharing the data directory is better.)

Probably I downloaded Zotero Standalone. I am using the normal mode, where I see the Zotero pane in Firefox itself on clicking the Zotero icon.
How do I link it to Firefox, my library online and Word; so that all have the same documents
  • So I should sync the current directory of the Zotero Mac application with the one that is used by Firefox. Should I just type it out in the Custom window?
  • I'm not sure what you mean by "Custom window". You don't need to type anything to set a custom data directory. Just click "Choose…" and select the other data directory.

Yes.. I did that..I chose the data directory of the Zotero application to be the same as the one for firefox. When I click on the Zotero icon on firefox, the zotero application if open pops up. The files I saved initially are synced now and I can insert the citations now. Thank you for all your help. I really appreciate it.
  • Great. To avoid confusion, you might want to move your old, unused data directory to the desktop. Once you verify that you moved the right one (i.e., starting Zotero still shows the right library) you can delete it.
