Keeps telling me to close Word and restart Zotero to install plugin

I keep getting this error message:
'Installation could not be completed because an error occurred. Please ensure that Microsoft Word is closed, and then restart Zotero.'
I have checked to make sure Word is not open, even ended the process through task manager and restarted Zotero Standalone and keeps coming up with the same message.
Any thoughts on what else could be wrong?
  • provide an error report ID please:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs#provide_a_report_id
  • Report ID: 1588188371
  • Try restarting your computer.
  • tried that too several times and still no change
  • Can you generate another report ID? I'm pretty sure there should be an error for this, but I don't see one in that report.
  • report id: 1617735187
  • I found the Zotero.dot
opening that file opens a Zotero compatible word file to use Zotero but opening word by itself the toolbar cannot be found
  • Is there any way to install the word plug in for Chrome manually. I have searched lots of discussions boards and come up with dead ends. I used firefox for the past few years. I have a new job/computer and need to use the stand alone version now. I keep getting the error, 'Installation could not be completed because an error occurred. Please ensure that Microsoft Word is closed, and then restart Zotero.' I just downloaded Zotero a few weeks ago and I am trying to use it for the first time on this computer. I've had no problem using the extension to add new articles to Zotero, just trying to get the plug in to work in Word.

  • Manual install for Standalone works exactly the same way. Where exactly are you struggling?
  • I can't figure out where to find the zotero.dot file with Chrome. I have not been able to install the word plugin via Standalone at all. I keep getting the error: 'Installation could not be completed because an error occurred. Please ensure that Microsoft Word is closed, and then restart Zotero.' I've restarted, uninstalled, reinstalled, etc. I've tried every suggestion I could find online. I figured I could install it manually, but where can I get the zotero.dot file to save it in Word's start up file via Chrome to use with Standalone.
  • forget Chrome entirely. It has nothing to do with this, which browser you use with Standalone is irrelevant.

    As the instructions say
"you can find a copy of the Zotero.dot file in the extensions/zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org/install directory within your Firefox profile. "

You can find your Zotero (rather than Firefox) profile easily by going to "Files and Folder" in the Advanced Tab of the ZOtero prefs and click "Show data folder" and go one level up in the folder hierarchy. The folder name will have a weird random string in it - will be something like abc3dfda.default
  • I found my default folder, but there is no zotero.dot file in it. Do I copy the entire .default folder into the start-up folder in Word? I tried copying the file pluginreg.dat to the start-up folder, but it didn't work. My file choices in the 5a03kzq2.default folder are an indexedDB folder, a zotero folder (this has my sqlite file), and the following files: cert8, compatibility, cookies.sqlite, extensions, extensions.sqlite, extensions.sqlite-journal, key3, localstore, mime Types, parent.lock, permissions.sqlite, places. sqlite, pluginreg.dat, prefs, secmod, signons.sqlite, and times.json
  • For Standalone it's within the program directory (e.g., C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero Standalone\extensions\zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org\install), not the profile directory.

But for what it's worth, you shouldn't need to do this. You're getting an error when Zotero tries to copy the file, which suggests that either there's a problem with the destination folder or some security software on your system is conflicting. If you're running security software, I'd try temporarily disabling it and then restarting Standalone.
  • Thanks Dan. But I am a faculty without administrative permissions on my computer, so I cannot turn off security software, that's why I was looking for a go around that I could copy the file myself and put it where it needs to be.
  • And in either location, I still cannot find a zotero.dot file to use. Is it a hidden file?
  • Are you saying that C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero Standalone\extensions\zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org\install exists but there's no Zotero.dot in it?
  • There are no files in the install folder. Should I uninstall and reinstall stand alone?
  • You don't need to uninstall, but you should reinstall, yes.
  • I have been adding new articles to zotero standalone just fine. It's only the word add in's I haven't been able to do.
  • Thanks. That fixed it.
