Firefox 11.0 upgrade removes connection to Word 2011

After upgrading to Firefox 11.0 Zotero lost the connection to word 2011 (Mac). Zotero toolbar is still present, but when trying to add a citation I get this:
Compile error in hidden module: Zotero

Tried removing Zotero from startup folder and reinstalling add-in and also removing firefox and reinstalling it without problem being fixed. Suggestions??

  • Do you have the 3.5.2 version of the Word plugin installed?
  • Do the Zotero scripts in the script menu work?
  • Pardon my ignorance, but where do I find the script menu?
  • Found it and no - they do not seem to work. I get error messages.
  • What error messages do you get?
  • Firefox was terminated unexpectedly (my translation). If I ask for a more detailed report I get a very long document to send to Apple if I choose to.
  • If I open a stand-alone version of Zotero instead and try to run the script from the script editor I get the following:

    Zotero Integration Error
AttributeError: Unknown property, element or command: 'active_document'
  • It sounds like Visual Basic for Applications isn't installed or isn't functioning properly in Word. This may help.
  • WOW, reinstalling Office? Is it really likely that this problem just arose after upgrading Firefox to 11.0? Before the upgrade Zotero and Word were singing beautifully together.
  • the plugin for Word was (and had to be) re-written due to changes in FF11.
  • Can I get the old plug-in and an old version of FF? Would that help me faster than reinstalling MS Office?
  • That would almost certainly work, yes (the old plugin is still on the installation page: http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_installation_for_zotero_2.1 ) - but it's a short-term solution: the extended support for FF 10 will run out in November 2012 and then you'll have to deal with this all over again (or use an insecure browser).
You also won't be able to switch to Zotero standalone, which with it's next release will switch to FF11 under the hood.
  • While I'm not entirely sure, I doubt this is related to the plugin upgrade. (The errors you're getting, particularly that AttributeError, suggest that Word's AppleScript functionality and Visual Basic functionality aren't working properly.) Standalone is basically Firefox 10 and the older Word plugin. If it doesn't work with Standalone, it's unlikely that downgrading Firefox and the plugin will help you, but you're welcome to try.
  • At least it gets me through the day (and perhaps also through a couple of weeks while not having access to Office discs). Which one of the old versions of the plug-in should I use?

3.1.10 (on the page I link to)- remember that that requires the python ext, too. But see Simon's caveat above.
  • The other thing that you might try is moving the file Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2011/OLE Registration Database to the desktop with Word closed, and then opening Word again. (On Lion and later, you should be able to open Library by holding down the option key and selecting it from the Go menu.)
  • Superb Simon!
That did it - what should I do with the OLE Registration Database? Put it in the trash?
  • Realized that a new OLE was created automatically. Threw the old in the bin. Thank you again for your patience and skilled advice! Really happy not having to reinstall MS Office.
