Word can not communicate with Zotero Mac word 2011

I have read every forum with this title and cannot resolve the issue. I am new to Zotero and just downloaded it plus all the plugins (several times as all the trouble shooting said to re-install everything) so they are the latest versions. I am using a Mac OS x 10.5.8. I tried using Zotero as a standalone but I have also installed the firefox version. The tool bar did not initially show up in Word, I added the zotero.dot file to my templates and it appears. However, when I try to add a citation, I get the error message that Word can not communicate with zotero and to ensure FF is open. FF is open.

    which FF version? The Word Plugin requires OS X 10.6 or higher to work with FF 4+ (and, I believe, Zotero Standalone, though not sure about that).

    I saw that and down graded to FF 3.6 and it still doesn't connect.

    With Firefox or Zotero Standalone open, try opening /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and copy/pasting the following:
    ls -la ~/.zotero* /Users/Shared/.zotero*
    Press return and post the output here.

    It occurs to me that Standalone isn't going to work on Mac OS X 10.5, but it looks like the output you have from Firefox is actually from pasting the previous output, and not from pasting the command above. Can you do that again with Firefox open and make sure that you are copy and pasting the command above?

    That's disappointing that the standalone will not work my OS, is it just a compatibility issue?

    Standalone is essentially FF4+ under the hood, so the same compatibility issues apply, yes (Simon - if I'm right about that, it should be added to the plugin installation page).

    I don't quit understand you last comment Adam.

    It sounds like you are saying that Zotero will not work with my Mac OS for FF 4+, since the standalone is essentially the same thing, the standalone will not work with my OS. So why won't the online version work when I downgrade to FF 3.6?

    I have the Zotero plugin/ extension installed for FF and have downgraded to FF 3.6 and it still doesn't work.

    I didn't try to answer that - Simon will have to look at your console output.
    Otherwise you understand me correctly (to be precise, Standalone and Zotero on FF4+ will work fine on your system - they just won't work with word processor integration).

    If you're sure you're running Firefox 3.6 above, can you also make sure you have Zotero 3.0.3 in Tools->Add-ons->Extensions, and that Zotero Standalone is closed? The output above suggests that you are either not running Firefox 3.6 or running an old version of Zotero.

    EDIT: It might also help if you can generate a report ID after re-triggering the error.
