Zotero Standalone Crash (MAC)

My Zotero standalone (MAC) keeps crashing. When I click to open, it doesn't open and freezes, then I have to force quit. Any suggestions on how to get around this?

    Try the following

    1. Open Terminal in /Applications/Utilities

    2. Paste ”/Applications/Zotero.app/Contents/MacOS/zotero -jsconsole” into the Terminal window

    3. Press Return

Do you see a window appear? If so, what does it say?
  • Error console window shows the following:

While registering XPCOM /Applications/Zotero.app/Contents/Resources/extensions/pythonext@mozdev.org/components-8.0/libpybootstrap.dylib, trying to reregister CID'{d86ff456-06dd-4b9c-aabf-af346a576776}' already registered by /Applications/Zotero.app/Contents/Resources/extensions/pythonext@mozdev.org/components-9.0/libpybootstrap.dylib.
  • Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  • Follow the steps above to open the error console, and type the following:
    Components.classes["@mozilla.org/preferences-service;1"].getService(Components.interfaces.nsIPrefBranch).setBoolPref("extensions.zotero.debug.log", true);
Press return, and then restart Zotero. If this works, you should see information appear in the Terminal window. Copy and paste it into a file and send the file to support@zotero.org.
  • When I open the error console, I'm unable to type anything because it freezes (I get the spinning wheel of death).
  • Help please
  • Does Zotero for Firefox work?
  • Zotero for Firefox freezes when I click to open it. I also deleted Zotero-stand-alone and re-downloaded it but still won't open.
  • You should be able to start Firefox by holding down the option key. You can then enable real-time debug output in Firefox by following these instructions, or, if extensions.zotero.debug.log doesn't show up, control-click anywhere on the lower part of that page, select New->Boolean, type extensions.zotero.debug.log as the name, press OK, select true, and press OK. Then start Firefox (not Standalone; this won't enable debug output there) from the command line as described on that page. If you can copy and paste the contents of the terminal window to a file and send it to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread, we'll take a look.
  • Sorry, I think I may have misunderstood what's happening. Are you saying that Firefox opens okay, but it freezes when you click the Zotero icon to open the pane? If so, can you generate a new set of debug output for what happens when you click the icon, following the directions in the link above?
  • Yes, Firefox opens okay, but it freezes when I click the Zotero icon to open the pane. I sent the new set of debug output to the email you provided.
  • That debug output included clicking on the Zotero icon? It was actually identical to your original output. It's possible that no additional output was logged, but just to be sure, do you see no additional debug output when you click the Zotero icon?
  • Oh sorry. I misunderstood you at first. I did get a new set of debug output when I clicked the Zotero icon while in debug mode. I had to stop it at some point because it seemed to go on forever. I have emailed the additional debug output.
  • You have a huge number of items in your trash, and Zotero is trying to auto-delete the ones older than 30 days when it opens. We have plans to address this issue, but if you give it enough time it should finish on its own.
  • Yes, you're right. It opens now. Thanks.
