CSL editor "no references selected in zotero"

I hope this is the correct forum.

I cannot get the CSL editor to work. On my dual boot machine I encounter the same problem in both Windows and Lubuntu:

When I open the CSL editor window and select a style (any style) I get the message "no references selected in zotero." I assume selecting one simply means clicking on it so it is highlighted and its information appears in the box on the right side of zotero. Searches suggest nobody else has this problem so I must be doing something stupid?

Firefox version is 10.0.2
Zotero is 3.0.3
In both cases the only extensions are zotero and the word processor plug in
  • Have you clicked on refresh?
  • Yes every time I try something (changing the style or the selected reference) I go back and click refresh but nothing happens.
  • Certainly odd and it sounds like you're doing everything right.
See if you can create an error report after trying this.

  • Thank you for the link I am following that advice now.

Bug: The CSL editor cannot access any selected references in Zotero when it is launched using the button in the advanced pane of the preferences window. It just gives the error message: 'no references selected in zotero'.

The bug can be worked around by manually entering the address for the CSL editor into the URL box in Firefox, which suggests that the CSL editor does not work if it is in its own window. This means the button in the advanced tab of the preferences pane is not very useful.

    Steps to reproduce:

    1. Make sure you have a reference selected in Zotero
    2. Open the advanced pane in preferenes and click on 'open CSL editor'
    3. select a style from the dropdown menu to see the error message 'no references selected in Zotero'
    4. no amount of switching windows and changing selected references makes any difference
  • ah OK - confirmed. That button is mainly for standalone where you can't enter the URL manually (it works there).
But obviously it should either work or be removed for Zotero for FF.
