crash o rama

i am using mac os x 10.4.11 (recently upgraded, sorry i don't know what it was before)
firefox 2.0.0.14 (recently upgraded)
whatever the current version of zotero is (i looked for an upgrade and don't find this on the zotero website)
the only plugins i use in firefox are sage and (newly) piclens. i recently upgraded firefox so that piclens would work.

have had no problems with zotero in heavy use until recently.
suddenly last night (possibly this was the first use of zotero since the firefox upgrade) every few minutes zotero decides it can't run any more. this takes several forms: "zotero cannot add this item", "there was an error starting zotero", or it gets hung in an operation. one such operation was an attempt to delete one item in the library. another was adding a book from googlebooks. there are many more. it is crashing enough that it is very disruptive. also once it informed me that my database was corrupted, it had saved a copy and was reopening from a copy from, thankfully, only a few minutes before. however, attempts to proceed with my work are again interrupted by crashes.

i am not doing anything fancy as far as i know in terms of zotero activities. i have not made any changes to where the database goes or anything like that. i do often attach pdf files to zotero entries, although that activity has not directly proceeded any of the crashes.

i'm worried about backing up, given the disastrous reports here on that resulting in empty files.

thanks for any advice!

  • Use the DB Repair Tool.

If you follow the instructions, you shouldn't have any trouble. You should certainly be backing up your Zotero database, like any other important data.
  • ok, i will back up.

but i also need to stop the crashing problem. ;)
    it's increasingly frequent.
  • Try the DB Repair Tool, and if it reoccurs, you might consider disabling fulltext indexing by setting the maximum character and page limits to 0 in the Search pane of the Zotero prefs.

These problems should go away with Firefox 3. We plan to release a Firefox-compatible version of Zotero when Firefox 3.0 RC1 comes out. (Advanced users might want to try the 1.0 development XPI with a recent nightly trunk build (not b5) of Firefox.)
