Long footnotes by zotero crash libre office (ubuntu 11.10)

Dear all,

when I enter a footnote with multiple citations (more than 5 ot 6 items) in libre office, libre office will crash after I touch the footnote with my mouse.

I remember to have had this problem before in older versions and it crashed X, now it is "only" libre office, but still it is annoying, especially since I cannot edit the footnote because LO crashes.

Please help!

Thanks,
Frank Wolff

Ubuntu 11.10
LO 3.4.4
Zotero 3.0.2

  • Probably related to http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/16250/unintelligibly-long-tooltips-crash-compiz-ubuntu/. Someone should probably upstream to LO, since the bugs there are for OOo.
  • I don't know if I get the other threat right, but I don't think this is a Compiz-Problem. I can reproduce the crash when I log in into KDE, ICEWM and i3.
  • It may not be caused by Compiz, but it's probably caused by the long tooltips that LO tries to show.
  • II can't get LO 3.4.4. to crash with this on Ubuntu 11.10.
I've put a dozen works in a footnote, it's almost half a page long - I can do whatever with the mouse - LO won't crash.

If my hypothesis is correct it might help to turn off "Store references in document" in the Zotero document preferences if it's currently enabled, since this will make field codes several times longer than they would otherwise be.
  • Now I am facing another problem: I tried to reinstall LO, just to make sure and removed all libreoffice packages and installed the main components again. LO runs fine (yet it is not integrated into the KDE-look anymore which is OK) but the word-processor plugin won't work anymore. The fields do not appear, also not after removal and reinstallation of the plugin.

    Is there anything missing?:

  • OK, I reinstalled the plugin and this problem was solved. However, now Firefox crashes right after I click "Next" in the Zotero document preferences. It does not matter which citation style I use.

This means I cannot do anything anymore.

Zotero is a great tool, I've been using it for years now, please help!

This report also contains technical information about the state of the application when it crashed.
  • OK, and me again, tracing the problem. When running firefox-bin 10.0.1, directly downloaded from the Mozilla page (not from the ubuntu repositories) and with this new "pure" LO install I cannot reproduce the crash, neither of FF nor of LO with long footnotes.
  • so everything is working now?
As you know(?) there were a bunch of problems with Zotero related to the Ubuntu build of FF (see the sticky thread at the top), so maybe this is just a strange way of manifesting the same issue.

The original crash may have been a manifestation of this bug, since you indicate you had KDE integration installed, although that error looks slightly different.

The Firefox crash could be our bug, but I can't see what we do that would cause it at first sight, and there's no reason that switching to the Mozilla build of Firefox should fix it in that case.
  • I am not at this computer right now, but it seems that everything is fine. I'll check tomorrow with a little more time and come back to report.

I did not have the KDE integration package installed, I checked on that before I posted the initial problem. I don't know why LO looked differently before the reinstall, but the style is unimportant to me.

Thanks for the help, keep up the good work so that I can continue to convince people to change to zotero.

    Frank
