quick format citation

Whenever I try to insert a citation into a document, a Quick Format Citation box opens instead of letting me choose from the library I've created. There is no way to get rid of the box that I can tell. It is there in whatever window I switch to. Can anyone please tell me why this is happening and how I can get Zotero to let me insert a citation from my library. Thank you! (this is urgent, if anyone has the time to answer)
  • you can switch to the classic view - permanently in the Cite tab of the Zotero preferences, on a case by case basis by click on the little arrow on the left of the dialog box.

That said, quick format allows you to select an item from your library - start by typing an author or part of the title, select it and press return. The new dialog is much, much faster than the old one.
  • Thanks so much. I didn't know how to add the citation in the quick format citation box.

I guess I have another problem, though. I am trying to create a bibliography for an appendix to the document I'm working on. I thought if I created a separate library, I could do that. But Zotero is adding the citations to the bibliography for the rest of the document. Is there a way to have a separate bibliography just for an appendix?

    Thank you.
  • The normal way to do that would be to put the items you want in a separate bib (your Appendix bib) in a separate collection, then select all items in the collection and use "Generate bibliography" from the context menu to copy the bib to clipboard, and paste it into your document as normal text.
  • I did create a separate collection, but when I add a citation to a line in the appendix, Zotero numbers it consecutively with the ones in the main body of the document. I thought that by creating another collection and choosing my citations from it, Zotero would number them beginning with 1, etc. Do I need to perhaps create the appendix as a separate document entirely and then cut and paste it into the document?
  • re-read what fbennet says above:
Create the bibliography not with the Word plugin, but from within Zotero.
  • Does quick citation allow you to include a page reference or is it only for when you want to cite the whole work?

    Thanks
  • @Isis - if you refer to the quick copy described here, i.e. via drag&drop, that always refers to the whole work, though once you pasted it into your document, you can obviously edit the citation any way you want, including adding a page number.
If you're referring to the new Quick Format word processor plugin:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_usage#prefix_suffix_pages_and_other_locators
  • I'm using the new quick format version but cannot add page numbers to the citation. Will I need to switch to the classic view to add page number?
  • no. follow my link right above your post.
  • Got it. Thanks.
  • thanks, very nice improvement
