Word extension - re-index references?

Hi,

Not sure if this is the place to write this: a friend has found a problem (that's cropped up before - see http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/2298/) with importing data from one machine to another: the import's fine - but the Word plugin can no longer find the inserted references.

I'm guessing that's whats happening is this: the unique key for the references stays the same in the Word doc, while the imported refs are re-indexed.

That being the case, is there any chance of the Word plug in having a 're-index missing refs' button somewhere? It'd be a search algorithm - but since the only piece of data that's actually changed is the unique key / index, that shouldn't be too much of a challenge...?

(I note also Zotero's suggestion to use a USB and portable Firefox - http://www.zotero.org/documentation/using_portable_firefox_on_a_usb_drive)

If this is the wrong place to be writing this, where might I send it?

Thank you, you lovely people you

Dan

Or perhaps each reference could have a globally unique key/index based on the reference itself... that way, the problem's fixable within Zotero. If indeed that's the problem!

A search feature like you suggest would be great, but at the moment the id is the only piece of data actually stored in the document, and the field value (i.e., the nonsemantic citation) wouldn't necessarily be that helpful or easy to use, so there's not really anything for it to base its suggestions on.

We are, however, planning to change the plugins to embed a combination of keys/URIs/metadata so that it can always find or suggest an appropriate item, so this should cease to be a problem in the near future.
  • Hi!
I'm also having the same problem. Since a paper is edited by all the authors on different machines, it would be nice, to somehow relink the citations in the word doc, with the actual database what is on the machine. Since I saw that you are working on this problem I would like to ask what is "near future" :D I'm asking this, because I'm forcing my lab and collegues to change to Zotero, but they cannot until this problem is solved. Thanx
