some automatically inherited tags
hello,
it's so great that in zotero the user has both folders and tags!
it would be very useful for entries that go into a (sub-)collection
to automatically inherit a (user-accessible) tag for each of the directories in which the entry belongs to. Each tag could be automatically attached to entries I place in a subcollection, and automatically removed/replaced when I move the entry to another subcollection or completely remove it from all subcollections (but still keep of course the entry in the global, "My Library").
This would enable more interesting searches, eg at sub-sub folders
of a collection by placing in the query a middle-of-the-hierarchy folder-tag of interest. Eg. Collection_Books -> Math -> Algebra -> Group_theory -> Entries_go_here and I search for 'algebra books with tags "xxxx"' that would give me both entries in the Group_theory sub-collection and also in the Algebra subcollection and of course all sub-sub-collections of Algebra etc.
Thanks,
A.

thanks for pointing out that option. Good to know it exists there.
Google has for a long time advertised tags as a better way to organize than folders (besides you can create a tag for each folder and then look at docs with that tag only to have the same illusion as a folder). But in my opinion, tags are great and indeed more powerful than
simple folder hierarchy (eg you can have a single document have
multiple tags but you cannot put the same one document in two folders without aliases/symlinks/too-much-trouble!)
Zotero with folders and tags is awesome because you can have
both!. Folders are a very very easy way to "assign tags" with a
simple drag and drop operation, and they offer a quick way to avoid
the clutter of unfiled/untagged, everything-in-one-big-thing "container".
So the preference option you mentioned is indeed enabling me to
search for what I want, but it doesn't make it easy on me with the clutter that would appear on the folders close to the root which would contain everything!
What I had in mind is perhaps one more such hidden pref
to turn on/off automatic addition&removal/replacement of folder-tags
(some people may not want to see more tags automatically added), and then I can browse (&search) by clicking tags on the bottom left
section...EASY!!!
That's just a recommendation of course! Please keep folders around though! :)
Thanks!
A
If you want to assign a tag to an item, just drag it over a tag instead of a folder.
There is an overhaul of the search functionality planned, and that might include parent collection as a search criteria.
Thanks mronkko, I'll wait to see the new search functionality!
Axon, have you found a work-around?
